Oh and by the way I took apart and cleaned my Ruger Mk. II last night. I did have a small amount of trouble putting it back together but all you need is a leather hammer to make it fit correct. About two hard blows to the barrel and the block stop was in place.

Every gun owner needs a leather hammer.

So how much does NASA pay and what are the hours?

I use my plastic reloading hammer, but same idea and method.

the trick is making sure that little cog is on the right hump when you lock the main pin in...if not the gun won't work and hammer will be stuck back making the option of taking apart impossible. Then you must violently slam the end of the barrel against a piece of wood while holding back the trigger to de-cock. It is quite an eligent move requiring dextarity, force, and luck to all come together.

I suggest anyone wanting to carry better practice.. ad stay practiced.

when i got my ticket, our range guy made us do multiple rapid fire shots at 6-8' intruder paper targets. all shots had to be in target to pass. if it was off paper.. you FAILED.

practice, practice, practice.

those statistics you ref are skewed. they encompas a wide range of shooting.. and are not limited to permit holders

NO HANDGUN is guaranteed to stop. Yes, a CNS hit is very effective and extremely difficult. Just hitting the bad guy is hard enough, most shots miss entirely. Expecting to get a CNS shot is close to winning the lottery.

I suggest anyone interested read the FBI Quantico Report on Handgun Wounding Factors available here:
The Gun Zone -- FBI Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness

Here are a few quotes from that article. I strongly suggest anyone interested should read the entire report.

Although I have done a fair amount of target shooting, sometimes I wonder just how effective my aim would be in a real life situation as compared to someone who has had experience with active target shooting? That is something I have never considered doing nor had the opportunity to do. Any input??

JD they say you will function as you train..I am no expert on this, but I say firing a thousands of rounds and staying current cannot hurt.

yup.. practice, practice, practice.

and that includes unloading and relaoding a magazine or cyl from a spare.. or from a speed laoder.. or from 'loose' ammo in your pocket.. while keeping your eyes peeled and downrange.. or in the dark.

our instructor had us do ALL these...

it's good practice to keep up with.

int he couple seconds it takes to look down, grab a spar amg and slap it in.. an attacker can be on you..

I have never done competitive target shooting but can't help believe some sort like IDPA or such would be of benefit.

Much of my shooting was based on our twice yearly qualification with timed stages and a tactical course. Every string begun concealed from the holster followed by a reload or reloads and holstering a "hot" gun. Magazines or speed loaders weren't put in your pocket, but had to hit the ground. Practice under stress would seem to be a good idea and competition would seem to fit the bill.

Any practice is good I think, but some is better than others. I have to admit I don't practice as much as I should.
