Strange thing,

I just checked Ford's online truck locator. None of the five dealers in the area had any trucks with the V10. That's out of over 50 trucks on dealer lots.

Odd.

Regarding Turbos, I always thought Superchargers would be best with a truck due to the fact that most of the boost/power occurs at lower RPMs. Not sure about altitude effects on Superchargers vs Turbos though.

It's not odd. Seriously, Ford, GM, Dodge tries to steer their customers to a diesel, even if they don't need one.

Reason: Huge profits on diesels.

Well, your theory certainly has merit, but why is there a huge profit on a diesel vs gas?

In order to get a V10, the average joe has to special order a truck to the tune of 6-8 weeks delivery time.

Imagine a V10 f250 with a $3000 add on blower. Roughly 450hp and 550 ft/lbs torque should be doable. That might bring the 1500lb heavier F250 0-60 times in line with the new Tundra.

Odd. Has anyone seen a V10 on the lot lately?

I did the same thing the other day. There is not ONE F250/F350 with a V10 in all of Chicagoland area, down to Bloomington, out to Dekalb, and northwest to Rockford. WTF?

It would be a shame if Ford was to discontinue the V10. I am on my third one and like it alot. Power when you need it without all the racket. I tow 10,000 lbs couple times a year and it handles it very well.:) My first one is still working well at over 175,000 miles, and from 70,000 on, its been hard miles.

I was on a lot this morning and all they had were diesels with sticker prices over $50,000.

Also, Ford did not have anyof these equiped with a 2.5" receiver. I thought I read this was going to be standard?

Superchargers are fine too, and provide boost with no lag. But... they cannot compensate for altitude in the same way as a turbo. A turbo has no fixed speed and spins faster with exhaust gas speed/volume. When air is thin, it can spin faster (due to less resistance) and keep manifold pressure the same as at lower altitudes, up to some level which in the airplane world is called the critical altitude. A super will have a fixed boost ratio vs. engine speed, and will always provide X amount of boost, but doesn't compensate for altitude.

Superchargers are easier to bolt on and easier to make, but turbos can provide both power and efficiency. Turbos can have lag, but it is minimal these days, and for truck applications it isn't likely to matter.

My dealer has 2.5" on all the Super Dutys on his lot. I have heard they come from the factory on the Dually but on the SRW they have to spec it. Stay away from a factory 2" hitch on all 3/4 ton truck or higher. Putnam and a few others make after market 2" and 2.5" hitches that can handle what the truck can. I have personally broke a 2" hitch on a F-250 and the truck was only 8 months old. I have seen them broke on all makes and models but the last one I saw was on a GM last year down at the lake. Of course they were all grossly overloaded. Long story short, a factory 2" hitch is a miss match for a 3/4 ton truck or larger. They don't match the hitch to the trucks capability's.

Diesel.

How long you plan on keeping it? 200k+
Trade in value.
Power/torque.
Loads.

Sounds better. :)

There's a huge profit on diesel because the diesel engine option is $7,000. If Ford makes a 15% profit on a truck, that means they make $1,000 more dollars on every a diesel versus a gas truck, right? Sell 10,000 diesel trucks for $1,000 more profit and Ford makes $10 million dollars.

Nice huh? ;)

Now if you finance that diesel truck over 5 years, and they make the finance rate (say 6%) on that $7,000 for 5 years. That's even more profit. See what I'm saying?

And lose your drivetrain warranty in the process. :(

Builder,

Your profit theory only works if you are selling lots of diesel trucks at a profit. If you have many diesels sitting unsold on dealers' lots because new pick up truck buyers have finally figured out the limited utility of the diesel given the current market situation, then your expected profits are not realized. I believe the majority of 3/4 ton PU buyers do not do any where near the towing they would have to do to justify the new diesel prices. I rarely see a 3/4 ton towing anything. As sales of diesels continues to drop, so will future trade in values.

If my '95 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4x4 (bought new) had the V10 in it instead of the Cummins, I wouldn't be able to give it away around here. With only 220,000 kms on the clock, the 5.9 oil burner is only now just getting nicely broken in. ;)
