If my '95 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4x4 (bought new) had the V10 in it instead of the Cummins, I wouldn't be able to give it away around here. With only 220,000 kms on the clock, the 5.9 oil burner is only now just getting nicely broken in. ;)

...zactly. ;)

Builder,

Your profit theory only works if you are selling lots of diesel trucks at a profit. If you have many diesels sitting unsold on dealers' lots because new pick up truck buyers have finally figured out the limited utility of the diesel given the current market situation, then your expected profits are not realized. I believe the majority of 3/4 ton PU buyers do not do any where near the towing they would have to do to justify the new diesel prices. I rarely see a 3/4 ton towing anything. As sales of diesels continues to drop, so will future trade in values.

I dunno guy......I mean what do you think Ford is in the business of, giving away diesel engines at cost????

The reason I know they make a high markup is because a close relative to me is an automotive columnist and he showed me the profit margins on diesel engines comapred to gas engines.

A eye-opener to say the least.

When I first bought it, I used it to commute as well, so it was a worthwhile option. I don't so much care how often I use the truck for towing, I'm more interested in having a rig that is more than capable to handle the task when I need it (even if that is only 6 times a year) for hauling our aluminum 3-horse Sooner, as opposed to towing with something that is close to its max capacity (or over).

A lot of horse people we know around here are down-sizing or considering it, ie. getting rid of their duallies and going back to non dually 3/4 or 1 tons simply because the dually crew cabs are too d@mned big and cumbersome to maneuver around and park in cramped show grounds.

I just saw a add today for Ford saying they have 0% interest on all "F" series trucks excluding the Harley Davidson's. Might be worth looking into again if your dealer did not tell you about the financing last time you talked to them.

Ford .not equal. Profit.

Don't care which way you cut it, dice it, look at it. They may say their in the black, but it is short term and at the expense of fill in the blanks

I think another string discussed the outrageous prices on trucks. Diesel in particular, but gassers too.

There's no way a Powerstroke diesel costs ~$6,500 more to manufacture than a V-10.

Ford is sticking it to you because they know that you know that diesels last longer than V-10's and hold their value better. Therefore, they won't let that intangible feature leave the sales lot without sticking you for it.

I have been looking at used trucks, can't justify the $$$$$$$ for new. I just crunched some numbers based on a gas truck getting 12mpg, gas going for $2.99, and a diesel truck getting 16mpg, diesel going for $3.59, these are local prices. Based on a $6K difference in price, it would take 242,000 miles to break even with the diesel, I won't live that long. As much as I love my diesel car... based on these numbers, my truck will be a gasser. :(

Plus the fact that if you invest that $6,000 savings in a modest returning investment, you'll have like $10,000 in 5-10 years. A substantial downpayment on a new truck. That's a lot more than the extra $5,000 you get in trade in value with a diesel when it's time to sell it.

Diesels are only good for towing heavy & often. Otherwise they're a high end luxury more than a necessity.

If gassers keep getting more powerful and transmsions keep getting better, I might just be driving my last diesel pickup. :(

I don't think I will buy a diesel again. I will go back to a half ton. I hear Ford has a new high pressure injection system called econoboost. It gives 15% better fuel mileage and 15% more power. If it was out today I would look into it and consider selling my Duramax. I love the Duramax but diesel went up to 3.40 and most places are getting 3.48.
