I think they consider that a win!

No, that is not a marketing win. If you advertise your product and people think it is a competitors, that isn't a win. If UPS ran an ad and folks responded by admiring the ad and shipping with FedEx because of that great ad, I don't think that UPS will be pleased.

Its a bit more complicated, most 3/4t Fords are D60 and 10.5 Sterling, only a 1999-2001 had the 50's before going back to 60.

A D80 is not just a D80, they came in several versions. The Ford dually D80 have larger axle shaft or higher spline count than the SRW Dodge D80.

The Sterling 10.5 has a 9000 lb weight rating. Can't get enough tire under it in most SRW apps to meet that so usually limited to the tire rating in use and the diff isn't large enough for recent really high hp/torque at those high axle loads.

Towing really high loads with 1 tons has been the norm for farmers for 100 years, its just how it works.

Our old 2001 F350 srw 5.4 regularly gets 3000 lbs put in the bed then a 27 ft bumper pull hitched up that is about 15,000 lbs loaded with hay. Its not going anywhere fast but it handles it fine. The neighbours old F350 dually would get hitched to much larger loads and only has a 6.9L diesel. This is not highway speed travel or hotshoting, just moving farm products around.

The 60/80 combo in a truck like mine is a stout combo no matter how you slice it. Without a doubt tougher than what Ford and GM offered in comparable trucks. Some Fords had a 60/80 combo, but that required a DRW F350. Most 3/4t Fords are 50/10.5 Sterling.

Oh I know that there are many versions of the 80, and that the Ford version is tougher than what is in my 3/4t Dodge. Just stating that the stick shift Dodge trucks had a real stout axle set.

The D80 in the Dodge pickups, hybrid or not, has shown to put up with an amazing amount of abuse. This coming from an engine that doesn't need 2000rpm and 8 cylinders to come alive.

This reminds me of a telephone survey I completed a few years back. Got a call and agreed to answer about 10 questions regarding home improvement stores. Over and over the questions were similar, "when you hear 'blah blah blah', what store do you think of or would be likely to shop at"? I answered "Lowes" to every single one. I recognized all the questions from a recent new marketing campaign for Lowes. This was easy, I thought, and I was happy to recognize their marketing efforts and reward them with my keen consumer memory. At the end of the survey I asked if I was right, and they said while there is no right or wrong answer, all the questions were from Home Depot ads. Ooooops!

They needed a big axle to stand up to the big torque numbers coming through the stick that had a deep first gear. The automatics had dramatically less hp/torque.

True, but Ford used a lower 1st gear than Dodge did in that era.

......But the fact is that the Tundra did pull the shuttle on it's own. The problem came about because the bridge that the Tundra pulled the shuttle across couldn't handle the weight of the vehicle that towed the shuttle and the shuttle together. While looking into solutions to the problem Toyota stepped forward.

Probably more like the Toyotie was hooked up to provide the extra pull that the shuttle transport needed OR Toyotie, Inc. paid NASA a chunk of yen to let 'em keep the slack out of the cable while the cameras rolled :2cents:

Toyota has been a long time supporter of NASA. When the problem arose they stepped up. Nothing any other 4x4 1/2 could not have done.

I really don't know for sure - maybe they will put in some kind of exemption for 1 ton trucks or require the cdl only if the truck is commercial licensed??

I'm guessing someone must have bought one of these 3500 2 wheel drive dually Cummins equipped Dodges by now?? My guess is so far purchasers have slipped through the cracks... but when they start uprating more of the different versions of the 3500's it will be to wide spread in sales to be ignored?? Or maybe they will just raise the # to 37,000lbs. ???:confused3:

The more information that is available on the new HD Dodge trucks the more impressive the improvements seem to be. It looks like they really did their homework as seen here
