Anything over 26k is CDL territory everywhere in the country

Actually not. In Washington you could have a straight truck with a GVW of 26,000 lbs pulling a trailer of 10,000 lbs and not require a CDL. A CDL is only required if the tractor is 26,001 and above and the trailer is 10,001.

WA State Licensing: Who needs a CDL?

Our laws are not substantially different than yours

Licenses & Permits - Commercial | Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to legally operate:

1) Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

2) Any trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) is 26,001 pounds or more

Which reads to me that a truck<26,001 and combination with a trailer < 10,001 would not require a CDL even though the gross is much greater than 26,000 pounds.

In our example here on this thread, a single 35 series PU pulling a trailer where the gross exceeds 26,000 pounds, a CDL would be required because the trailer would have to weigh more than 10,000 pounds.

I do not think you are correct according o your link trucks 26,001 and more a CDL is required, trailers 10,001 lbs and more require a CDL...tha chart is misleading. Your example a 26,000 truck pulling 10,000 lb trailer puts you in CDL territory per this---
"and a combined vehicles gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds "
Types of vehicles that require a CDL

You must have a commercial driver license (CDL) to drive any of the following vehicles:
柊ll single vehicles with a manufacturer痴 weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
柊ll trailers with a manufacturer痴 weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, and a combined vehicles gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
柊ll vehicles designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver). This includes private and church buses.
柊ll school buses, regardless of size.
柊ll vehicles used to transport any material that requires hazardous material placarding or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR 73.

I don't think so, it is asking single GVWR, not GCWR

Not quite. The rule has an AND in it so both halves the statement must be true. The rule states: "All trailers with a manufacturer's weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, and a combined vehicles' gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more."
So, IF the trailer is rated for more than 10k AND the tow vehicle is rated for more than 26k you have to have a CDL, but if the trailer GVW is 16k and the truck GVW is 10k you would be legal without a CDL.

A CDL is required because of the GCVWR, its over the 26,001 lbs

My boat trailer rating is gvwr 10,001lbs.
But my actual boat on trailer grosses below 9000lbs.
I wish I could figure out where it is OK to drive it!
Canada OK? Washington?
Interpreting writtens regs is definitely NOT my forte.
And IME, calling *anyone* for advice usually just piles on misinformation.

Per the flowchart on the Washington State site, as long as your tow vehicle is rated for less than 26k, doesn't carry hazmat materials, isn't a schoolbus and doesn't hold 16+ people you can legally tow it without a CDL.

The chart is misleading I think. If you to the paragraph above the chart it clearly states that MFG rated trailer of 10,001 lbs is CDL required.

Types of vehicles that require a CDL

You must have a commercial driver license (CDL) to drive any of the following vehicles:
•All single vehicles with a manufacturer’s weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.

•All vehicles designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver). This includes private and church buses.
•All school buses, regardless of size.
•All vehicles used to transport any material that requires hazardous material placarding or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR 73.

Its only misleading if you ignore the rest of the sentence after the "and" (the part that I underlined in the quote).
As written (with the "and" in the sentence) you must have BOTH a trailer rated for over 10k AND a tow vehicle rated for over 26k to need a CDL for weight reasons.

Aaron what do you think 26,000 +10,000 adds up to? that's the combined vehicles rating and that equals 30,000 lbs , which is over the 26,001 thresh hold. Now if like some one said its a 16,000 lb GVWR truck and 10,000 GVWR trailer ..no CDL. If the truck and trailer together is over 26,001, then a CDL is required.
