Another interesting fact about rd bales and their weight(#s of hay) is how much more 6"s in diameter of bale adds to each bale.
Here's an example:
4X5 has 78.55 cu ft of hay
4X5.5 has 95.04 cu ft of hay
4X6 has 113.11 cu ft of hay

Yeah that's right bigbull, only person to blame now is myself if it doesn't get done. It is time consuming but thankfully I work 8on 6off and weekends my father can help, also have another guy can call to come cut for me sometimes. I do wish had bigger than 8ft cutter but look at it,could be worse.

My dad bought our first hay cutting equip around 1975, so I have been baling hay literally all my life and most of that time we were also custom balers. We started out doing only square bales then move to doing both, but basically stopped the squares when labor become too hard to find. The size of our round baler has always basically depended on market demand. Back then (in our area), not everyone had a large enough tractor to handle the big bales or just didn't want to fool with them. I don't do that much custom work anymore unless you count helping out the neighbors.

Personally, I prefer the bigger bales as we can get across the field a little faster. Sometime over the winter we plan to trade up to a 5x6 baler since that's what our market is demanding now and that's fine with me. The plan is to bale 700+ 5x6 bales next year, but we all know what can happen to plan.

i know of 2 guys that have trouble getting some1 to bale their hay.1 has a 10 or 15ac meadow or smaller.so it wont make that much hay.the other guys 2 small meadows might make 125 bales a year.an they have trouble getting them baled because they dont make enough hay to mess with.

The neighbor came last weekend and baled the second cutting off my place, unfortunately only 95 bales. The first cutting was late so there wasn't quite enough time for the second cutting to grow. The first cutting did 10.5 4x5 rounds and he said they average about 32 small squares per round bale. I figure they got about 430 bales off my place this year, just keeping track in case I ever start doing it my self I'll know what to expect.

32 sq bales per 4X5 rd bales would be very light sq bales(30# ea.). I only figure 16-18 sq bales in my 4X5+ rd bales

My square baler is 14x16x32 inches.. or 4.14 cuft.. 4x5 is roughly 79 cuft.. or about 19 sq. bales.. but really less than that cause I like them tight and heavy.. 75 pounds..Lou

Lou
19 sq bales X 75#s = 1425#s PLUS a sq bale will be packed tighter per cubic ft so that's similar to apples to oranges comparing cu ft of one kind to cu ft of another kind of bale. I've never seen a 4X5 grass rd bale @ 15% moisture or below out of any color rd baler go much over 1000#s. Most rd balers are hard pressed to make a 950-1000# 4X5 bale. I've bought several 4X5 bales that were suppose to weigh 1000# + that didn't weigh 900#s.
