I called the dealer today as we are nearing the 5k mile mark to schedule the 1st oil change. Since it has 24mo/24k mile free maintenance, I figured I would take advantage of it. The service writer told me I am only due for a tire rotate, oil change intervals are 10k miles and 5k on severe duty schedule. This is also in the manual. I am wondering if this interval increased when they offered the free maint program. The truck, per the svc writer, has 0-20w synthetic, allowing for the 10k mile change interval. Hmmmm....thoughts?

My GMC goes apx 6-7k before the computer yaps for an oil change which I believe assumes dino, not synthetic...I'd say it sounds reasonable given the synthetic.

Guys that I work with that have expensive European cars that are all synthetic are going around 10k per the manuals and computers.

If, and I say if, if you sleep ok at night with 10,000 miles oil changes, then, I say, by all means, stay at 10,000 mile oil changes.

My 2006 tundra is every 7k with a sythetic blend. If you really want to be shocked our service intrivals for some of our semi trucks is 50K (DD15 engines)

I have a 2011 Tundra with the service package but I change my own oil even though the dealer would do it for free. Me decision was based on the complex oil filter arrangement ant the numerous complaints of dealers screwing it up or overtorquing the canister and causing oil loss and engine problems. I want no part of that.

Search the net or check TundraSolutions website. it's a little hairy to change the first time but the second time is a breeze. I change my oil--synthetic--at 7,500 or so miles and use 5W20. That viscosity is what it came from the factory with so it's good enough for me. A lot of guys say the 0W20 causes too much engine noise. I took their word for it.

I've got a 2013 and I DIY mine, skipped the dealer freebies. I want to go twist their arm to give me a half dozen filters in exchange for not taking them up on that.
I also changed out the plastic filter cap with an OE aluminum one. You can get them off Ebay complete with an aluminum wrench.

My 2007 Tundra 5.7 came with regular oil and I based the oil changes on 5,000 miles. At 48,000 miles I switched to synthetic oil and now use the 10,000 mile interval.

If it were MY new truck and I planned on keeping it for 100K or longer I would change the oil at 5,000 and 15,000 miles on my dime, and let them do it at 10,000 along with their tire rotation. This is what I'm doing with our new Carry. After they do it at 15K then I'll change the oil every 7,500 miles (Mobil 1) which is about once per year for us on both the Camry and my old Tundra.

Toyota Lexus Scion Special Oil Filter Wrench Tool V6 V8 Filter Cap 15620 31060 | eBay

Here you go.
You get the wrench and an aluminum cap.
If the perforated tube in the middle of your plastic cap is a different length than this replacement - bend the two ears, swap them out, then you are good to go!
Why Toyota uses aluminum on some and plastic on others, who knows, but it works great. Check out tundratalk and it is a popular and proven modification, that is where I learned of it.

The service interval on our VW TDI is 10k miles. I thought it had gone to 15k miles on gasoline engines, with synthetic oil in both cases.

I switched to 0w20 oil on our Tacoma 4 cylinder. Better mileage. Think most of it is pumping loss reduction. Doubt there's any friction difference.

I have a 2007 Tundra, and they notified me of the increase to 10k before I saw any mention of the free maintenance program. I'm not even at 60k because I have a work car, and it has always gotten synthetic oil, so I don't think too much about it either way.

10K with modern synthetics is not a issue

You should all remember, although synthetic oil can go the distance, very few oil filters will.

Till now, not one person mentioned that.

dirty oil is dirty. dirty oil bad. synthetic is great, but not if its dirty. high interval oil changes make cost of ownership / maintenance prices look lower making the manufacturer look good on paper. look at how many more engine jobs Toyota is doing now compared to older models, same w/ bmw. I do fleet maintenance for a couple of different companies w/ many different makes & models. many have well over 200k. what they all have in common is regular maintenance, 3-4k miles between. one livery car 440k runs like a clock. lof every 3k no more. that's a 2004 mercury grand marquis.

The aluminum oil filter housing is a great up grade over the OE plastic 1. I ordered mine from Toyota for a Toyota venza. You'll have to remove the center tube in the aluminum housing and replace it with the 1 out of the plastic housing. What puzzles me is, why did Toyota put this cheap plastic housing on these trucks and put a heavy duty housing on a venza ??? I made me a wrench like this 1 B-4 this one came on the market. I should have gotten a patent on mine
