If the vast majority of your use of the truck is not towing, and when you tow it's no more than 8k or so, you'd be a fool to complicate your life with a dually IMO. If you've got a big 5th or GN, get the dually.

I've had both and yes you get used to the duals but you still have to handle them, though a long bed crew cab SRW is also challenging and I've put up with that for 20+ years...

Not problem when I had a big camper on the SRW - for the occasional trips. If I had a big camper again and was going to do lots of camping, I'd consider the DRW - but only if the duals would *often* be a benefit.

I've had both SRW and DRW. One thing to caution on DRW is they suck in the snow and mud and will get stuck much worse than a SRW, especially if it's a diesel with the heavier weight. Even simple wet grass with a slight incline can be enough to keep you in one place. And because a DRW diesel is so heavy, there aren't many folks that can pull you out.

I’ve never had my DRW stuck where I couldn’t get it out with my fairly small tractor or another truck. That’s because I already know I can’t make it.

I have 2 cummins duallys and I tell anyone who asks

"if you don't NEED dually and if you don't NEED a diesel you are better off with a 3/4 ton gasser."

and yep they get stuck when a dog hikes his leg on the tires.

Understood from all, if getting DRW, make sure to get 4X4 because they tend to float.

I'm actually back to thinking maybe 250/2500 or SRW 350/3500 because towing is not an all the time thing for me. I just hate to think in 8 years I buy a big 5th wheel or something and wish I had bought the DRW. I will likely keep the next truck 15 years or more because that's how I roll.

Have visited the Ram dealer several times lately and they have both a 2500 and 3500 DRW that I really like. Stopped to take the 2500 for a drive the other day while I had a free hour, but unfortunately the battery was dead and couldn't get it started. Had to go into the building to find a salesmen in the first place and he had to go find the right keys. Then the truck wouldn't crank. Then the salesman didn't seem to be in the mood to spend any more time with me when I told him I wasn't buying it today anyway and wanted to drive it and maybe the 3500 and the Fords before making decisions. He basically took my # and said he'd call me back sometime to schedule a drive and said he had another customer coming in to buy a Jeep in a little bit. Grr. Don't like that attitude from anybody. I'm sitting here trying to decide on spending between $55 and $70k and the salesman seems he doesn't want to be bothered with spending time with me if I'm not ready to buy on the spot.... I chucked his card when I got home. I'll try another salesperson next time I stop in there if he's not literally the first one I happen to run into. He was nice enough, but just didn't seem interested.

Don't know if it's still the case, but I was told if you get a ford to have the engine bullet proofed or you'll have trouble. I have no idea if this is the case in 2019 models . Maybe the ford guys can tell you more

That was only the case for the 6.0L. It was only available from '03 to '07 model years.

I recently upgraded trucks. Went from a '99 1500 Silverado w/ the 5.3 to a 2017 2500HD Silverado w/ the Duramax and Allison. All I can say is, this thing is a beast. It pulls our 36' camper like it isn't even back there. Went from 5 MPG when towing with the old truck to about 12 now. It had just under 14k miles on it when I got I've since put almost 2000 on it since the 2 months I've had it. Still haven't had to add DEF fluid. 2017 was the first year for the L5P engine. I've not heard of any issues with it at this point.

I had SRW F150s until I bought my tractor, I wanted the ability to easily and safely tow my 5300lb tractor on a 3k lb trailer and whatever else I need to haul.

I bought a 1995 F350 single cab, flatbed, DWR 2wd truck with 4:10 rear and the 460. IMG_1337.JPG

Truck is a hair better than riding a skate board down the road but it tows a lot better, brakes are better, acceleration isn’t anything to brag about but it reaches highway speeds just fine and gets me there. Where the F350 really stands out is, I can load anything I want back there, I can make the load a hair more tongue heavy and the truck doesn’t care, it’s so stable it’s crazy, it doesn’t float or anything, the ride just gets smoother from when it’s unloaded, besides that you don’t really notice it’s hooked to anything.

As far as dually’s not sinking, my buddy has a 2500hd Dmax 4x4, he got his truck stuck and I went to pull him out, being my dually was only 2wd, I couldn’t grip enough to pull him out even on the road when he was on the field. IMG_1122.JPG so we unhooked his truck from the trailer, I pulled his truck out, I gassed it in reverse, made it to the trailer and hooked my truck to the trailer and had him pull me out since my truck doesn’t sink like his did, I was spinning tires the whole time, i cut in the field maybe 4-6in where he was down to his axles, we got the rig out and I pulled the trailer back to my place.

I recently got a 05 F350 4x4 with the V10, it’s a 6 speed. The tires on it for the rear are ready to be replaced but I have yet to need 4x4, it’s got a 4:10 rear also. And rides a world better than the 95, the 05 has coil springs up front. IMG_1298.JPGIMG_1302.JPGIMG_1301.JPGIMG_1462.JPG

Driving and parking a dually isn’t any harder than parking a SRW, a dually isn’t any wider than a trailer.

If I was getting a new truck, I would pick a XL F350, Supercab, 8ft bed, 6.2, 4x4, DRW, aluminum flatbed with tuff torq trans, with electronic locking rear end with at least 4:30 rear end. That’s rated to 15,800lbs conventional and like 21k gooseneck. Can’t say I will tow anything that large but I like the stability of the dually while towing, they are vertically shorter than the SWR version, they have more and thicker leaf springs in the rear etc.

I don’t care for all the bells and whistles, it’s just not worth the extra debt to me, I would rather pay it off sooner and not have a huge payment over my head. If I was wealthy and money wasn’t a prob then platinum it is lol, until then I’m just as happy in the XL.

I have had long discussions with diesel owners about the Gas vs Diesel dilemma, most all of them that said they owned both said that both will get the same work done, the diesel does pull the lid better BUT everyone said they have put more money in the diesel than they had the gas to get the same work done. So it’s more expensive up front, it’s more expensive to maintain and all you gain is a little better performance. The 6.2 with a 4.30 or 4.5x rear will tow anything I could ever want.

Also the F350 SWR tows the same as the F250 SWR, only diff is payload. The F350 DRW tows the same as the DRW F450, only diff is payload and I believe the F450 gets the 19.5 commercial wheels.

My 05 F350 has a GVWR of 13k, my 95 F350 has a GVWR of 10k, my buddies 05 Dmax 2500HD is 9500lb I believe. Main diff is just payload in the truck.

There is rumors that ford is coming out with a bigger gas engine in 2019 or 2020.

Also if you bump up to the F450 you can get the v10, it’s more HP and torq than the 6.2. Idk why they stopped offering the v10 in smaller stuff but now it’s only in F450 and above.

Not true. If talking pickups, the F350 actually has LESS payload than the F450. Both are class 3 trucks with 14k GVWR. The F450 is heavier due to the much larger axles, brakes, etc. The F450 is just a much more capable truck. Yes, it comes with 19.5" commercial wheels.

Yep, will be out in 2019 as a 2020 model. 7.3L.

V10 is only available in the chassis cab trucks now. It was discontinued due to fuel economy.

Just a note - in gravel, a 3/4 ton longbed crew will get stuck in 2wd before a dually of the same configuration will. At least in my uphill gravel drive it will. The 3/4 ton - I now have to put in 4wd to make the same trip the dually would make in 2wd.
