22 pistol

Ruger makes a great revolver...I own 4 of them (well, the LCP is a semi-auto).
The only thing I have ever heard bad about the Ruger semi-auto .22's is take down for cleaning can be difficult.
My .22's are an old (old!) Colt Woodsman (not so easy for takedown either) and a S&W Model 17 revolver. I'd recommend those S&W Model 17's to anyone looking for a good .22 revolver.

Would love to own a colt woodsman.

There are lots to choose from that would fit the bill.

As others said
Browning Buckmark
Ruger MK II or III
If I were to pick a Ruger this would be my choice
Ruger MKIII Deluxe TALO Edition 22 Cal Semi Auto : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

Not for target but find these interesting:
WALTHER P22
S&W has a 22a model
Bersa makes a neat little 22 called a firestorm

correction .. went out to Walther site .. they do make a P22 target model.

I have had a Ruger Mark I, a S&W model 41, and a Browning Buckmark.

The S&W Model 41 is head and shoulders above the others.

The Mark II may have addressed some of the problems in the Mark I, but I found the magazine spring way too strong in mine, and the little button on the follower was too small, making it very difficult to load. A spare magazine, in original factory blister pack was defective, exacerbating the problem.

The original Buckmark I got had a tendency to misfire and the receiver spring was very strong, which combined with a very slippery and poorly shaped slide, made clearing a misfire an exercise in futility and a demonstration of poor safety techniques. I sent it back to the factory and it came back with a new slide with two "ears" on it which made retraction much easier, and it had a lower tendency to misfire, but the initial gun was clearly defective.

Disassembly and re-assembly of the Buckmark can only be described as poor. Maintaining sight zero relies on tightening two allen-head screws with very special washers to the same torque as on the previous assembly, and woe be unto he who loses one of the washers -- no substitutions allowed.

The Model 41 was just sweet shooting from the word go.

WALTHER P22

It has an excellent feel. Has never failed to fire/cycle except when trying to use rat shot. I guess rat shot doesn't pack enough punch to work the action. A very good gun for the money.

I've had a High Standard SharpShooter .22LR with 6" bull barrel since early 1970's. Great piece, very accurate, and reliable. Have run thousands of rounds thru it - from cheap stuff to the best I could find - never had a misfire or jam. Also have used a lot of birdshot - again never a jam or misfire.

Right now, I prefer CCI MiniMags and CCI MiniMag "Shot Shells" (Birdshot).

I love my Walther P22. It does have a short sight radius, making longer shots more difficult. My next gun is going to be an integrally suppressed Ruger.
It is a little bit extra $ but imagine a quiet 22LR pistol.

Well, without dragging it out to check and see what model I have, I will say that I have a Smith and Wesson .22 semi-auto pistol. If I remember right, it has a 10 shot clip and has never jammed or misfired, shoots accurate, and has been super reliable. I bought it 1989, so it may not be made anymore. But it has been a good one.

I shoot SW 22A and it fits my needs - i.e. shoots better than me. I bought it because it was too good to pass; Ruger hunter 22 would be my choice otherwise.

I will throw my vote in for Ruger as well. Like several others I have had my Mark II for 20+ years. It has a 5 1/2" bull barrel with target sights. I have shot countless rounds at targets as well as used it squirrel hunting without failure.
