Well got a call back from the dealer. He said Deere would pickup the cost of the shaft Assembly, and the dealer is going to reduce some of the hours (From 8 to 6). All said and done its going to cost me $475 out of pocket, plus he is going to pick it up, and return it for free. He told me they had done the same thing recently and the total cost was about $1400 for parts a labor. I guess this is pretty fair since the tractor is almost 3 years out of warranty. However, it does piss me off that they didn't note this in the manual. If they had, then I would have greased it and I would be posting this right now.


I was thinking about it. If Deere wasn't going to step up to the plate, and take some responsibility for it. I would have taken the shaft to somewhere like Six States, and see if they could have made a replacement slip shaft with seal bearings.

Any idea who I can call at john Deere (not the dealer) dealer was not much help at all! There was never any mention of lubricating this in the manual. Please Help!

I just cut a hole in the plastic to get at the nice little hidden panel JD so thoughtfully placed. I made a little plastic door to hide the hole, with tiny fancy brass hinges and a clasp to keep it shut. After many frustrating tries to get grease in the joint I'm quite sure I succeeded. When is last time I greased a U joint on an automobile? I have had rear drive PU trucks with over 150,000 miles and never greased a U joint. Why, because they had sealed joints. What could possibly be wrong with using sealed U joints on this tractor? I don't think JD would even notice the extra cost because they are really proud of their stuff.

Ruko, go price equivalent equipment and parts at Deere, New Holland, Agco, CIH and Cat. You will not find Deere being the most expensive.
As for those people who can't be bothered to read the service and operators manuals because they already know it all, Tough Luck.

Sorry I don't agree.

Lubing that hidden U joint was not in the manual I received with my tractor. So when I "bothered" to read the manual it didn't do me any good any way.

You are right, it was not mentioned in the manual which resulted in many of these joints failing and causing catastrophic damage, Shame On John Deere. Ironic who the "know-it-alls" really are isn't it.

My 4WD Dodge Dakota had a rear U-Joint fail at about 60K. Dodge did not design in any rotation on the rear axle and, with the stock raised suspension, the rear U-Joint angle is too great. At the advice of really good shop, I replaced it with a heavy duty u-joint with a grease zirk. I grease it every 6 months or so and I'm hoping for a longer life on this one.

Alright the manual was revised to include the oversight.
It still stands that finding the operator's manual included with a used tractor is a rare event.

It stands that you are missing the point and seem to be blaming others instead of John Deere, it is clearly their irresponsibility.

I would figure by the support that Deere is offering past warranty that they are taking responsibility. How many other manufactures would say tough luck and offer no post warranty coverage ?
