From what I can see in the service manual, all the lever does is move a collar to engage two splined shafts that are piloted together.

The output shaft has a hole drilled through the splines where the collar slides. In the drilled hole, there is a spring and two balls that act as a detent for the collar. It all looks pretty simple, but you have to disassemble the transmission to get to these parts. I'm guessing that the spring or balls are missing. That would certainly explain your problem.

Yeah that's interesting, I hate to have anything new taken apart like that but I guess I have no choice if that what it comes too! I have yet to hear back from the dealer....

So you say that you think he may be missing is balls?

Sorry, just couldn't resist.

That's funny BRBurns, but your right.
There is nothing worse than needing balls for an operation...and having none!

Talked to the dealer today, he said they will have to take the tractor apart and see what the problem is, he said it is definitely internal and should not be popping out. They will have it around 7-10 days he said. I told him I will wait until my rear chains come in and my brush guards for the lights that way they can do everything at once. Maybe I will have my 50hrs on by then and they can do the 1st service also..... Chains are supposed to be in july sometime...

Such a shame to pay a dealer their prices for routine maintenance. Unless JD is better about than my Kubota dealer, $250 to change fluids and sharpen the blades plus $50 to come and get it.

"".......this other lever with the knob on the end does not feel like it locks into anything solid.""

I had exactly the same problem on an older different model tractor a couple years ago. I spoke to the service guy and he explained what probably happened and how to fix it (mine wasn't under warranty). It was quite easy to fix w/o completely disassembling the transmission. On mine, there was a spring loaded ball that moved to detents to hold the lever in either ON (engaged) or OFF (disengaged). According to the service guy who claims he has seen this numerous times is what happens is when the lever is moved beyond the detent positions the ball pops out and down into the transmission. I drained the oil out of my transmission and found the ball. I removed a small side plate on the transmission near the control lever and put the ball back in place --- problem fixed.

Your 2520 may be very similar.

From what other had said that might be true, I could only hope that there is not any damage being caused to the transmission if this were to be true.... How did you get it to stay in and not do that again? The 2520 is a foot activated lever so I can't see how it could go past a certain point? I just get the feeling my tractor was built on a Monday or Friday..:(

Hey Tom
I wouldn't do that. That may have been your problem in the first place, too much down pressure with your foot.
I know there are probably owners that do this all the time with no problems, but the lever has a knob on it,and I would look at that as something to be moved with your hand. IMO, if it was meant to be moved with your foot it would be designed differently.
Hey,maybe I'm full of it,but that's my .02.:)

Yeah I guess that could happen but they (dealer and JD) all said it was a foot activated lever even in the videos from john deer. I don't ever remember pushing it that hard but I guess it would be easy to do. I will have to ask again but I might have to use the hand method as you do, once its fixed.... I guess I just never expected it to bt that fragile, I expected more like bullet proof....
