3 bottom plow purchase advice

jagzyf,

sorry, I knew which plow I asked about and apparently I must have thought you had ESP..ha.

It was the IH740 and the linkage I was wondering about was the one from the rear of the plow that goes from the tire assembly to the front of the plow

That is the steering linkage. The hitch on the front pivots and as you turn that linkage turns the rear wheel. It help both when the plow is in the ground and out. This because the plow will not swing behind the tractor like a 3 pt mounted plow.

This picture here might show it better.

IMHO, best mounted plow ever was the Ford 101. (Note: NOT the 10-1, but 101...) Simple, rugged, still (relatively) easy to get parts, and it had adequate throat clearance so as to allow trash (ie crop residue) to clear through without plugging. Ford 101's were built for Ford by either White/Oliver or Pittsburg Plow.

Semi mounted plows typically will pull just a tick harder than a mounted plow (of same size), but not as a hard and fast rule. Semi mounted plows are a lot easier for the tractor to handle once you start getting beyond 3 bottoms.

I've owned several Deere plows. Older HHS and NU bottoms tended to pull a LOT harder than other brands. (more abrupt contour of moldboard)

As mentioned, Massey made a great mounted plow, just some models tended to plug in weeds/crop residue.

Best semi mounted plow I ever used was a White plow. (Not certain of model....It's been years)

Here is the plow rig I use. It's a good friend of mines equipment, but he let me find it for him. 1st it came down to a Deere 7000 series tractor or a Kubota, at the last minute the dealer offered us this 6605. I found the plows for him a few weeks later. The only dislikes I have with the plows is they are not trash friendly and the sidehill shift pivots the frame instead of sliding the hitch. Other than that, great plows. These are the same as White/Oliver, etc.

We had Deere plows before, as Farmwithjunk stated, they pull hard. For a time Deere was actually putting Kneverland btms on their plow. Don't know if that is still an option or not.

The 2nd picture shows the tail wheel. It had a double acting cylinder, the depth is set with a stop bolt.

Another option would be to look for a 2 or 3 btm trailer plow. I have seen a few around here and my grandfathers each had one. They were sold a long time ago though.
