3 point beast of a STUMPGRINDER checked off my "attachments to buy" list today

Today I made a 2 hour drive to pick up my new to me Shaver SC50 3 point hitch stump grinder (stumpbuster as Shaver calls it)

It was used, no idea what year but I know it's newer than an '05, and in very good condition. It doesn't look like it's had much use and doesn't appear to have sat out in the sun all it's life. They're are a couple of bad parts that did not allow me to give it a test run today. The major one, is that the QD fittings on the 4 hoses are the wrong style for my tractor remotes, so I have to go buy 4 new male QD fittings to put on the hoses. The second thing is that out of the 25 teeth on the stumpgrinder, 8 of them were chipped or broken. I imagine the original owner wasn't too careful about rocks in the way. It seems that 13 of the 25 teeth do most of the cutting, so today, I swapped out the 8 bad ones with 8 of the good ones, and put the bad ones in the locations that barely do any cutting, however I want to buy replacement teeth for these.

I also went through the stump grinder and greased the only 3 grease points it has, and double checked all the bolts on the teeth, some were loose. I'm going to buy some new gear oil for it and change that out in the near future, hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get the fittings I need and give it a test run.

The stumpgrinder appears to be the exact same model as the Woods SG100 unit that Pclausen just bought (thanks for the information over PM's Peter!) so I think it should be easy to get parts for it if needed in the future. Shaver specs show it is rated for a 35-100hp PTO tractor and either Cat 1 or Cat 2 three point hitch. It had the Cat 2 pins in it but the dealer threw in the Cat 1 pins I would need, so I changed those out today as well. My tractor is only 39 hp at the PTO and I'm curious to see how it handles such a large stumpgrinder.

I know I remember seeing a thread on buying aftermarket replacement teeth, rather than the $40/tooth price that Woods wants, but can't seem to find that thread, anyone know what it was called?

I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve that knows what toy he is getting, but just can't play with it yet!

edit: Having some trouble posting pics

Can I ask what you had to pay for it?

Did it come with a dozen eggs and the coffee? Or did you do what my wife says I do? Return 4 hrs later after leaving to buy eggs and surprise! "honey look what I found next to the egg store !" Of course, my wife would have suspected something when I hooked up the trailer to "go and get some eggs". The grinder appears to be secured well to the trailer, but without appropriate tie downs I would have worried about loosing the eggs during the ride home. Not to mention I would suspect the ride on my trailer rough enough to break the eggs. Boy, you could bet my wife wouldn't let me forget it if when I got home an egg was broken!

Re: 3 point beast of a STUMPGRINDER checked off my "attachments to buy" list today

Very nice!

I see yours also have hydraulic hoses that seem to be way to long. You might considder marking the hoses at the correct length for where your remotes are, and then take the hoses with you and have them trim them and put the correct fittings on. This way you will have just the right length hoses and perhaps fewer adapters that you would otherwise need.

I'll have to find the time to get mine hooked up sometime this week/weekend so we can compare performance.

What kind and size stumps will you be working with? I have a mix of pine, poplar and hardwood. The poplar stumps I have are by far the largets. That stuff grows like weed around here.

Sackett,
I saw the ad for the stump grinder on Craigslist asking $2500. It was posted at 11am and I called that evening with no answer. The next morning I called at 8am and told him I would buy it sight unseen for the full price. I was surprised to hear that it was a tractor sales place because I thought that sounded cheap.
When I got to the place the guy told said to me:
"see that trencher attachment over there?"
"yup"
"we mixed up the prices in the adds and THAT's the one we were supposed to ask 2500 for"

So they basically posted it for the wrong price but still honored it since we made an agreement, or so they said anyways :)

Peter,
I have mostly Eastern White Pine varying anywhere from 4"-30" with most being in the middle somewhere. I do have mixed hardwoods but for now will only be cutting down the smaller ones up to 12" or so.

Good idea about the hoses, they are certainly pretty long.

As far as the eggs go, we stopped at a store for coffee and they were selling fresh eggs so I couldn't turn them down, just finished eating some of em. It's amazing the difference fresh eggs make. I'm jealous of you guys with your own laying hens. And oh ya, the wife certainly would have suspected something if I hooked up the trailer and said I was going out for eggs. :)

As far as making money with it, I'll probably try to get some side jobs here and there but mostly it's for my own land, I just couldn't pass it up.

My master plan to to buy a larger tractor in the next couple years and therefor I'm buying implements that are a tad on the large size for mine, with hopes of them fitting great in the next tractor.

Hopefully I'll get to try it out tomorrow, today is a raw and rainy day, more of a whiskey day than a working day :)

I was gonna say. Given the almost new condition of the unit, that was an awesome deal!

As far as side jobs, I do have a few already lined up, but like you, I mostly got it for my own use. I know most outfits change like $3 per inch or something like that. I think I'm going to charge a flat $50 hour fee in the local area.

Interested in locating a cheap source for replacement teeth as well. I got a lot of rock around here.

Peter,
Not sure what rates are like in your area but around here that would be a pretty low rate, I would think closer to $80 an hour with a 2 hr minimum or something to that effect.
Do you earn a living with your tractor or is it more of a side business?

I know for a fact I remember seeing a thread on sourcing teeth from somewhere aftermarket, I just can't seem to find it again. I know it was around $13 per tooth at whatever the site was. I just called my dealer and they quoted $55 per tooth!

I'll let you know if I find anything, I'm gonna try Bailey's to see if they have anything, I know they have a lot of teeth for similar equipment.

Here are a few pics of the new toy.

Those are not pics, that sir is stump grinder ****!

You STOLE it at $2,500 sir! I paid way more for my TSG-50 new...

On my TSG-50 the dealer said the teeth can easily be sharpened for $5 each or less, I also thought they could be switched locations to more evenly wear the teeth...

Its a side business for me. I have a regular day-time job in a completely different industry (IT engineering/software development).

I'm prepping some of my land for growing Christmas trees for a small "select and cut-your-own" type operation.

Some days your the bug, and some days your the windshield...

Today, I was the bug. I drove to the hydraulic store to pick up the 4 male QD fittings I need. Without thinking, I grabbed a spare fitting I had in the garage and just assumed that it was the same as all my others. I told the guy I needed 4 more of those (4 for the stumpgrinder and 1 extra as a spare) and $40 later I was out the door. I get home and hook up the first two fittings, then got smart and decided to plug the 2 hoses in to make sure they fit correctly. Well, sure enough, they DIDN'T! Man I was pissed about that. It was completely my fault as I grabbed the wrong fitting in the first place. I didn't even know I had those types of fittings but I guess I learned my lesson. Needless to say, I didn't test out the stumpgrinder today. :(

Re: 3 point beast of a STUMPGRINDER checked off my "attachments to buy" list today

A few of us with the TSG-50 Woods stump grinders bought teeth from Global Equipment Exporters. If my notes are correct....the part number I bought is 450121 and the price was about $13. each (half of what Woods wants for them). I am not sure that the teeth for your model are the same as these are....but the folks at Global seemed quite knowledgeable. I think you can locate them via Google.

I still have the original teeth on my grinder....and have not sharpened or done anything to the teeth. IIRC I have ground about 700 stumps so far on these teetH (I keep a chart on the wall at my shed). I bought a few spares in case I happen to lose one or two or damage them....but I dont have rocks and I would venture to guess that I will grind another 500 stumps or more before replacement is needed. Mine seem to cut like new.

There is some discussion about this on our prior thread on the Woods Stump Grinder review thread. I think you can find it by searching: stump grinder. (I'm not sure how to post a thread....sorry.)

Re: 3 point beast of a STUMPGRINDER checked off my "attachments to buy" list today

For what you paid this is a very good deal. It may have been demo'd but certainly not alot of usage. I would be curious to see the retail price. I checked a smaller Woods model and with tax it neared 6k. The machine looks pretty simple. I have steel and a heavy duty right angle gear box. I am just looking for the correct flywheel to adapt. I would sooner explore the possibilities than lay out 6k for a limited use machine.

AgentBlue,

Not sure where you live, but my dealer is selling TSG-50's for A LOT LESS than $6,000... PM me if interested and I'll connect you.

Thanks,
David

Re: 3 point beast of a STUMPGRINDER checked off my "attachments to buy" list today

Foggy and Schism,
Thanks for the info on the teeth. I called another place today as well (sharptools.com) which is pretty local to me and they had stumpgrinder teeth that the lady said would fit my model stumpgrinder, for 10 dollars a piece. Only thing is, she said they were sort of rounded, like a thumb nail, rather than straight across which is what I have now. Do you think a rounded shape would be much different? More effective, less effective?

Agent Blue,
That does seem like a high price for the SG50, I don't know how much they go for but the place I bought my Shaver SC50 from (same as Woods SG100) sells them new for $6,700 not including tax. I imagine the SG50 should be closer to $3,500 to $4,000 or so?

This morning I went back to the hydraulic store to pick up the correct fittings I needed, since I got the wrong ones yesterday like a dumbass. I changed them all out in a pretty short amount of time, then I wanted to check the slip clutch, so I loosened up the the 8 bolts and spun the clutch, then tightened them all back up to 1.31" specs that the manual states. I then checked the gear oil, it was low, but very clean, I drained some out to see what it looked like and it didn't look dirty at all. I added a quart to the gearbox until it came out the side plug. I was happy to see that the paint on the slipclutch bolts, or drain plug, had never been touched before. It really does seem like this unit had almost no use. It's strange that the teeth are broken though, even the cutter wheel barely has the paint worn off it?
But after some work this morning, I was finally able to try out the new toy today!

Let me just say, I can't even imagine how good this can cut on a high horsepower tractor, because I was amazed at how effective it was on the back of my tractor! I started off on a 17" Red Oak stump that has been sitting about a year or so, and I took off only about a couple inches at a time, I would take a swipe across, bring the stump grinder back to the starting point, then lower it, and take another swipe across. It worked very well, and that is with 8 bad teeth right now, so I assume it will work even better with all good teeth.
I should mention I"ve never used a stumpgrinder before, at all, ever...so, I have nothing to compare this to, however I'm more than pleased with the outcome, and how it performed on my tractor. I also tried it on some smaller stumps, down to maybe 6" or so, as well as a larger pine, I didn't measure that one, but it was probably close to 24". I was cleaning up part of my yard today and "playing" with the stumpgrinder here and there, all in all I think I ground down 7 stumps, there is no trace of them anymore! Well, as long as you don't count the woodchips!

I'll try posting some pics that I took with my phone, I wish I had my good camera with me at the time. I did video tape the first stump I ground down, the entire process (which is really a pretty boring video after the first minute or so). I'll try to post that but not sure if I can.

I'll post some pics that I took throughout the day today. I mostly used the stumpgrinder as ballast today, aside from those few stumps I ground, but I'd really like to see how many stumps I could grind in a day, I imagine quite a few.
