I have searched everywhere for some information and have not found anything. So I am looking for some help. I recently parked my tractor on the side yard on a slight hill without setting the parking brake. This was mainly because I was being chased by ground Yellow Jackets, so my judgment might have been a little off. While I was spraying myself off with the water hose one of the neighbors had come over due to the commotion and the tractor was rolling down the hill toward the pond. He pulled the handle on the parking brake to stop the tractor and got nothing. So he lowered the bucket and stoped the tractor. I am not sure if the brake broke or what caused it but before I started using the tractor that day it worked.

Now when I hit the peddle or pull the hand brake all the visible linkage works. It engages the diff lock as it should and turns the shaft that goes into the rear trans axle. But it does not stop at all it is not an adjustment setting as there is not resistance at all and before I would get stopping force from just a slight press of the peddle.

Does anyone know what is inside the transaxle housing that the brake shaft connects to and how hard it is to get to? Or is this a simple problem that I could be over looking the solution?

I am also looking for a suggestion on the Yellow Jackets because they have to go with the kids running around the pond.

Nothing to offer about the tractor brakes,

But.... If the yellow jacket hole is near enough to run electrical power, place a vacuum cleaner hose as close to the hole as you can. turn it on, and walk away for an hour or so. You will collect over 90% of the critters, and the colony will starve out in a day or two.

If too far from power, Night time, gas and pick and shovel and a flash light. I suppose a back hoe would work after the fire died out ;-)

Depending on the location of the nest, the yellow jackets get treated with a cup of gasoline first, and then lit afire.
Or a dusting with Sevin dust.

Go to jdparts
John Deere - Parts Catalog

and put in the tractor model and look at the schematics to see if it helps track the parts for the brakes.

Give the gas fumes a few minutes to settle into the nest, fire is not necessary the fumes will kill them. Fire is however really satisfying :D

Thanks everyone for the input so far. I used that website and I think I might have damage to the cam on the shaft that goes in the axle housing. But I think to get in the housing I have to crack the case and drain the fluid. I really don't want to do that. I will call the dealer tomorrow.

On the yellow jacket front I think I found the hole they are living in. So do I use gas diesel or kerosene? I am thinking I will spay the area an night fall and then light it up. Any input on this would be great.

I use gas, no need for sprayer just pour it, cover hole with rock then run like he||. Not necessary to light it up, the gas fumes will kill them all. Just make sure it's almost dark so all of the yellow demons are in the hole.

Engage park brake and move transmission range shift lever to a position other than N (neutral) before leaving machine unattended. Transmissions will not prevent machine motion without the park brake engaged.

The parking brake needs the transmission range to be in any position other than neutral to work...:(

Thanks for the note. Problem is I can pull the brake up in low and drive with no resistance. Pushing the brake and driving does nothing.
