Engage park brake and move transmission range shift lever to a position other than N (neutral) before leaving machine unattended. Transmissions will not prevent machine motion without the park brake engaged.

The parking brake needs the transmission range to be in any position other than neutral to work...:(

Is that a specific function of the John Deere models? The need to be in gear?

On all four of the tractors I have presently , the "parking brake" applies the wheel brakes and could care less if there was even a transmission in the tractor.

The text is from the 3038E Operator's Manual...and note it is the transmission range selector that can't be in neutral

Thanks for the note. Problem is I can pull the brake up in low and drive with no resistance. Pushing the brake and driving does nothing.

Question...has it ever worked??...It might be it has never been adjusted properly...

When you say drive...are you stepping on the Forward Travel Pedal or are you at idle??

It deffinetly worked before the incident. It would hold the tractor in place on a hill with dirt in the bucket. Now I can pull the lever up all the way and move the tractor with my hand turning the tire. It is really odd and going to the shop soon if I can't figure this out.

I can dive it forward and reverse at idle or turned up. It would give lots of resistance before if you tried to drive it with the brake set.

Talked to the dealer and they think it is a broken carrier on that cam. I am going to try and get it up there this weekend. This time of year it will take several days to get it back. So more to come. I am also planning to get those yellow jackets this weekend. Kind of excited about that one.

I have been more excited to hear about the wasps myself.

My wife went up to bed last night, and after a few moments I heard her exclaim Ouch! I've been stung!
Sure enough there was one of those skinny waisted black and gold wasps on the window sill when I went up to "irradicate". (My wife does not "do" bugs well)

Fortunately, those critters don't pack much as far as staying power when it comes to the sting chemicals. A rub of the stinger spot with neo-sporin pain relief cream, and she was off to dream land without a hitch.

The wasp has taken up residence in the wood stove, which happens to be burning brightly at the moment, keeping these cool rainy evenings at bay.

Be VERY CAREFUL if using gas. A man in the next county from me was burnt over 60% doing this. I have no idea how much gas he used, but the fire ball engulfed him and neighbor put out the fire and he was airlifted to an ER.

Then that was a LOT of gas... and/or there were additional combustibles nearby and the gas allowed to vaporize for awhile before ignition.
Have doused gas (about a cup) on fires and yellow jacket holes for many a time with no fire ball that was harmful.

Still, the BE VERY CAREFUL is a good thing to do with gas.

The park brake will work with transmission in neutral or in gear. I believe it is just an extra safety precaution in case the brake is not engaged properly, the transmission will help hold the tractor. If in neutral and brake comes off, tractor will roll freely.
