3038e Brakes and Ground Yellow Jackets

That is something else I am trying to avoid as I do not want to focus on one entry for the yellow jackets and get attacked with them coming out of another entrance.
I have always gave them about a gallon of diesel in their hole, then lit it by throwing a rag or paper from a safe distance. Like others said, the group of them on the ground burning with the occasional flaming escapee is pretty satisfying. Then, put it out with the hose and all the mud fills in the hole. Then pour bifenfenthrin or cypermethrin on it for any that come back looking for home.

I just did the hornet spray and mosquito fogger trick to another very active hole. Everything went great and I was going to plug the hole with a stick. The stick went in easy and the hole opened up into a area about the size of a basketball (old stump). I filled the hole with ashes from the burn pile and stomped it in tight. Done!

Give the gas fumes a few minutes to settle into the nest, fire is not necessary the fumes will kill them. Fire is however really satisfying :D

Fire ants? I usually have just carpenter ants, this year the fire ants have taken over, I'm not sure which is worse.... Gonna have to break out the tow behind sprayer and bifen again.

Be VERY CAREFUL if using gas. A man in the next county from me was burnt over 60% doing this. I have no idea how much gas he used, but the fire ball engulfed him and neighbor put out the fire and he was airlifted to an ER.

Been there. Not fun. Although mine was caused by a plugged tank vent, and a badly designed exhaust system(italian made sickle mower) Tank didn't vent, overpressured due to nearby exhaust, machine ran rich, overheated exhaust, built more pressure, melted tank, and "BOOM". 6 weeks in the burn unit, 1 year out of work, lots of painful physical therapy. Was up and walking when the ambulance got to me. Due to burned lungs and excessive blood pressure/stress/shock, went into cardiac arrest 3 times in the ambulance. CPR being performed when offloaded at the hospital. Paddles brought me back. Stayed overnight in local hospital until stabilized, then life-flighted to burn unit. I'm still kicking. Good plastic surgeon, saved my ugly mug, but couldn't improve it over the previous version....... Still carry lots of scars on my body.

There are generally two holes from the nest. Do not use diesel, it just pisses them off, ask me how I know! Best to deal with them at night. Not sure if anyone in your area does it but I found a guy in our town that use to collect them and sell them for creating anti venom. I gave him the vicinity the nest was in and he located both holes. He put a board over one and a grocery bag over the other then beat on the ground. After he bagged as many as he could he poured gas in the hole to kill the rest.

OK, a few days ago I got hammered by yellow jackets, I was cutting firewood and pulling brush out of my field. I didn't even know they were there or where they came from, once they started getting me.

These YJ's the MOST aggressive I've ever see ANY stinging insects, and so they must go! AND I've seen many of these over the years...

OK, now for the test... I know how to wipe them out, but I thought I'd try a few suggestions quoted here before I do so, SO first, I HEAVILY dusted (covered) their entrance hole with Sevin.

They had to walk right through it to get in and out of their rather large hole and that's exactly what they did for two days! At first it riled them up a bit, but after two days it looks like not much happen from the Sevin and it's business as usual!

Today, I went back there and poured a "quart" of gas all over the entrance, right over the Sevin... I took my pu as I'm turning into a "snow flake" and needed my "safe space!" lol

I sat there about 5 feet away watching them for AT LEAST 20 mins., and they got VERY angry, but I never saw even one of them, drop dead or even look sick! YES, I could have thrown a match on the gas, but remember, this is an experiment! AND it's dry here, I don't need to be starting my field or woods on fire!

I'll go have another look tomorrow...

Pour gas into the hole next time. I think it would evaporate too fast pouring it around the hole.

MUCH of it DID go right down the hole....

Remember it was at least a quart of gas, probably more as it was in a bucket and I just poured it out trying to get as much as I could down the hole.

Here's the update: One day later there was less of them out, and some of them seemed a bit disorganized, but there's still plenty of them around and many of them going in and out of the hole...

The gas absolutely did NOT kill them out...

Today or tomorrow, i'm going to go back and try something else, MAYBE some water, heavy with dish soap...

as I said before put gas in a bottle and plug the hole with it, that way they get the full effect of the fumes and you are only close to the hole a short time.

Wonder if Rob has yellow jackets or some other bee? A cup of gas has always worked for me on yellow jackets.

So far this year, have not found any yellow jacket nests. That's on at least 10 acres that I mow or use rotary cutter.
