Phillipe,

Which mower are you using on your machine?? I really like the R1 tires but was under the impression that many of the JD mid-mount mowers were not compatible with them. Have you found your R1 tires to damage your lawn or do they do well for you?? I think my next tractor will have the R1 tires if I could make sure the mid-mount mower I would want would be compatible.

Deere does it for strength.

DF, are you talking about not being able to weld cat iron? Do it all the time. There's a MIG wire for it but I've used the regular wire in a pinch.

I know that welding cast iron/steel can be done, but I have not done it.
Furthermore, adding a structural weldment to a piece of cast iron/steel
that is not of similar metallurgy is not a good practice. There are various
grades of cast iron/steel out there and we don't know what this one is
made of. Don't forget that when adding weldments, the usual material
available is mild hot-rolled steel, not cast.

This is the first place I have heard anyone say the use of Al is for strength.
Even the JD engineers I ask about this have never suggested that. There
are 2 failures documented that don't seem to occur with cast iron/steel:
the 3PH arm pivots and distorted bolt bosses when used with the JD hoe
subframe.

Earlier JDs also had problems with the PTO gear housing when they were
made of Al.....maybe that is why they went to cast iron/steel for subsequent
units? It seems they have come full circle there.

I use the 60 D Autoconnect, but could have used the 72 just as easily. They are both totally compatible with R1s, the only difference is you won't raise the deck as high when not in use, but already plenty of clearance.
I wouldn't really call it a lawn ... In fact I had 2 Massey 35s 2 WD with R1s and hardly ever damaged the turf. The Deere 3520 is harder on the grass, especially in 4 WD, the front tires are responsible. I have learnt to avoid 4WD and sharp turns around the house and the tire marks have disappeared.
