Buying Advice 3700 vs 4400 or L3940

   / 3700 vs 4400 or L3940 #51
"Narrow" is kind of an easily misunderstood term and when used here is relative. An L3940 will never be truly "narrow" or unstable. If the wheel are like those on either of mine, as mentioned you will have two options on "wide" or "narrow" once you flip your disks.

I don't think there is much if any difference in the dimensions between the two.

Yes, I see the three sizes, and I'm not sure if that's for r1, r3 and r4 or in and out measurements. If there's only two positions, then maybe it's for tires, but in which position? Above it I see overall width, which is what I was using, because if it's wider than the tread pattern, I can't go dragging the fender on the fence, or don't want to.

My only point is that when considering between the two tractors, dimensions should not be a significant factor.

You can get any tires you want and have the dealer set your rims however works best for you.

You have lost me on overall and tread width.

OK, here's my issue. The overall width is the closest I can get to the fences for the corrals. There are 3. If it's 5'6" wide and that tractor can't pull a 6 or 7" then I'll have to go back and do the last 6-12"manually. The corrals are for equestrian jumping and probably 1-2 acres each. For both sides or even jsut the outsides, that's a lot of work. So I'm trying to figure the smallest one I can get and pull a 6 or 7 with. The 5ft seems to be too large for the 25PTO (like the 3240) and OK for the 3540 or 3700. Some have said 3700 will do it no problem if it's not too rough. These aren't like small trees, jsut central FL brush stuff. and it FLAT, I mean the elevation on the land is 32ft max and 28 min. So there's like + or - 1 degree max. Starting to think I should just get the 3700su and buy a b series little one for tight stuff.

You do seem to have a unique set of circumstances.

Try not to get too wrapped up on minutiae and "specs". It is easily done as I spent months doing the same thing and made my mind up as to which tractor was the "right" one for me. When I went to the dealers with tape measure and started trying them all out, I found out that my "dream tractor" did not fit my needs; twice.

On two occasions I wound up buying a different tractor than intended, once smaller and once bigger.

I understand the issue of trimming. On one of our farms we have a lot of nice fencing and there is no "easy" way to trim along it with a tractor and not do some damage if you are not really careful and have a lot of seat time. I usually use Roundup so I don't have to get so close. I recently mowed a section with my M8540 using a 10' Woods DS1260 and had my wife follow behind and trim with our L5030 and a 6' Land Pride RCR2672. We are still going to have to go in with Roundup or our JD2305 and a little less Roundup. Your fence design may be a little easier as our bottom rail is pretty low.

If needed, you can off-set your mower a little, I just wouldn't do it for general use.

TripleR ... Just have her ride on your DS1260 with a string trimmer.

You may be onto something there, I already have her in the back of my truck spraying Roundup and Crossbow:thumbsup:

Most people would say big tractors and mowers don't go together very well with trimming close to fences, trees and buildings. All it takes is a minor flick of your wrist on the steering and you've taken out a fence post or pushed in the side of your barn. We use the BX to trim and the L to mow the open spaces. Even a cheapie riding mower will be handy for the trimming.

I am kind of ****, but here is the tread width of my L3940 with R3's, accurately measured by me. The point I am trying to make, the manual will say what it says, if you are concerned, get a tape measure and get the details you need yourself to be sure. Philip.

Tonight I'll measure my L3940, which has R4's with the wheels set at whatever normal width they come with.
