Well me and the wire wheel are spending so much time together here lately that we're both now on a first name basis. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

After soaking all the fasteners in liquid paint stripper I use the wire wheel to further clean and polish each and every fastener before giving them each a coating of Black Oxide, then a dunk in finish coat to seal them. Black Oxide is not a paint it is formed by soaking the fasteners in a mixture of selenium and phosphoric acids.

[What kind of paint stripper are you using?

And what's the name of that Blue paint? /color]

Jagmandave every time I go to a Home Depot I grab a gallon of the cheapest liquid (not paste) paint stripper that they have at the time. It is all added to a 5 gallon stripping bucket, so there is no one name brand that we can recommend. All the liquids seem to work well for immersion and rather quickly.

I picked up a gallon of industrial enamel at Home Depot. Had them mix it gray-blue, they call it Confederate. Paint is a bargain purchased by the gallon. I pour two quarts off into their own can for later touch-up use and use the remaining two quarts for immediate use.

Today I broke out the pallet forks and reunited the lathe bed with the two bases.

Looking good Mike! I guess I didn't realize it was a South Bend Lathe. Was it made in South Bend? If so, it's origination is about a mile from where I am sitting right now. Sadly, the company vacated their manufacturing plants a while back. I see a sign on a small building up the road but don't know much about them. Maybe just service parts anymore?

Keep the pics coming, it's fun to see your progress /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Mike unfortunately Caswell doesn't tell you what the sealing mixture is made of in their kit. It smells and acts a lot like a penetrating sealer and it doesn't get sticky as it dries on the fasteners. Hope this helps.

RobS, thanks we are having fun with the project. I'm pretty sure this lathe was built in Indiana in the 60s, at least the Operation & Maintenance Manual that came with the lathe came from Indiana. South Bend was bought out by LeBlond but the parts (even for my lathe) are still available if one can afford them (LeBlond is outrageous). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mornin Mike,
Very nice indeed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have been so spoiled being in this trade for the past 34 years that I cant quite comprehend what it would be like not to have this type of equipment at my beck and call at all times /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did you get more than one chuck? 3 jaw 4 jaw? quick change collets? Give me the skinny when you get a chance.

Good luck with your new toy oops I mean tool /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Scotty you're very fortunate to be able to use machinery without having to lay out the cash to make the purchase.

The seller threw in a small faceplate, large faceplate, 3-jaw chuck, 4-jaw chuck, 4 various tool holders, the chuck wrench, and the tool post wrench.

So far we have found our first set of defective bearings that were located in the end gears on the main drive shaft. I was lucky enough to find a set still in their original box at eBay. The pair of bearings set me back $0.99 /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Well I decided yesterday to strip the headstock so all the working parts could be checked. This is what the stripped, cleaned. headstock looks like. This lathe has 3 oil pumps, a main pump in the headstock, a second oil pump in the gear box, and a third oil pump in the apron. The copper tube was fastened directly to the main oil pump by means of a compression nut and a ferrule. The ferrule had worked loose and the tube fell apart once I touched it. When it's time to once again put the pump back in the headstock I'm going to use a flared connection at that point so this will be less likely to happen in the future.

LeadPoison I have all kinds of ideas banging around in my head that the lathe will permit me to make.
