Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

PineRidge,
I have a question about the VFD. I do some power tapping in the lathe occassionally but very frequently on the milling machines where I'm blind bottom tapping or using tapered NPT threads. I can switch from forward to reverse instanly to suck that tap out. How will the VFD affect that feature? Can you localize it to only one machine or is it plumbed throughout the entire 3Ø cicuit to any other machines you may have?

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

From what I understand so far from reading the operators manual the lathe can be localized, not affecting any other machinery connected to the VFD.

Looking at the schematic it also appears that the OEM relay box and over-current protection circuits mounted on the back of the lathe can be eliminated since these features are all a part of the Toshiba VFD unit. User remotes can also be purchased to stop/brake/start/reverse/jog/and panic stop and conveniently be mounted to any machine.

Scott there are two sight windows on the main headstock, one for oil level, and one to indicate oil flow from the pump. Likewise there are also two sight windows on the gear box, and a single sight window on the apron. Isn't much reason to be running low on oil unless I'm just plain to lazy to look. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Jagmandave I understand these VFDs are pricey. Don't know if it's true or not but was told the unit I purchased sells for 3K. I found it at a manufacturing forum that I am a member of. The Toshiba unit was new, unused, in the original box, $500.00 and it almost feels like Christmas once again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Today we took all the old scratched and faded tags on the lathe and made them look like new. Here's where we started.

After a soak in the liquid paint remover they come out looking like this.

Then they are placed on a piece of cardboard and spray painted a heavy coat of satin black enamel.

Once the enamel has throughly dried I invert the tags on a piece of wet fine sandpaper that is sitting on a flat surface and slowly work the tag back and forth to remove the paint on the high areas of the tags. Here's how they will look when finished.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Today it was time to start reassembling the headstock. Here you can see the clutch/brake (input shaft) including all associated linkages in place. Also installed is the constant speed shaft, and the reverse bracket and gears.

I almost got the main oil pump installed but when I tried to install the 1/2" external snap ring to secure the pump on the input shaft the ring popped off the snap ring pliers and went who knows where. Did hear it bounce off the wall of the pole barn though. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'll make a trip to Home Depot and get a replacement tomorrow.

When I was installing one of the shafts It was a real PITA to get all the gears lined up correctly on the splined shaft. Took me about 45 minutes with help to jiggle it all around so it would finally slide home. Then thinking all was successful I stepped back only to realize that a spacer washer was still in my hand, yup you guessed it, the washer was supposed to be the 1st thing to go on the shaft before anything else (I was holding it so I wouldn't forget about it). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Might not have been funny at the time but we're chuckling about it now. I did get it right the second time around and got quicker at putting it together too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nothing like "bonding" with your new lathe when stuff like that happens....quality time. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Randy thanks for the help you gave me on that shaft. Don't think I would have got it without another set of hands.
