This is the power-plant. It's a 5 HP 3 phase Westinghouse motor now being cleaned up. I'll eventually need to deal with a phase converter before this project is completed. If anyone has one for sale please shout.

As we dismantle various assemblies and sub-assemblies they are stripped in liquid stripper then placed in piles according to the way they will be needed down the line.

This stripper has already ruined 3 pair of chemical gloves. I wear gloves, goggles, and a respirator when working with it as it is really nasty.

That looks just like the one at Northern Tool for $129 this month in their sale flyer!!

Seriously, I am sitting down now and you can tell me what that beautiful machine is worth. I know there will lots of zeroes at the end. Very nice refinishing job.

Mike,
You can send all the extra parts to me when you get done re-assembly! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thats a real nice lathe, now you just need a big Bridgeport mill to keep it company! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Kenny we have actually been hunting for a Bridgeport Mill for some time now. All the real deals are out on the west coast.

Gordon21 I also belong to a manufacturing forum and one of the regulars there passed this info on to me:

Pineridge, you lucky dog, I can't believe this went so cheap. There were three sold by the same guy, the first went for $900, the second for $800 and you got yours for $512. This is a Turn nado, all of them had hardened beds, and back in the 60's when they sold, they sold new for what in today,s dollars would be $20,000 to $25,000 each. These look to be in excellent condition. You are lucky that I couldn't figure out a way to get the thing to Montana in any inexpensive manner, cause I was going to bid on one of those if I could. Congratulations I hope you enjoy the lathe. I wouldn't waste any time or effort on painting it now, I would use it a few years and paint it later. It looks good now.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

The lathe has a rather large chip pan so I drug it outside, poured a couple of gallons of liquid stripper in it and started working on some of the larger sheet metal parts that needed stripping.

Mike,
If a converter is too much you might find a 240 single phase motor cheap somewhere. The frame will be different if that's a problem. That motor looks like the old type frames, the newer rerated motors have different dimensions. Anyhow, just a thought.

What kind of paint stripper are you using?

And what's the name of that Blue paint?
