Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Hi Mike - for a guy who spent most of his time in the wood shop, this is a terrific project to watch unfold from the cheap seats. I would be intimidated by the undertaking personally, but you sure are doing a first-class job. Thanks for sharing. Here's to many years enjoying the fruits of your labor, can't wait to see what spins off that beast when you're finished!

It's really flattering to know that you guys are following along with this project as it's progressing. Originally thought that this lathe thing might have bored you all to death.

I think so far the toughest part about the whole project has been preparing the outside castings for the finish paint. Using a little Bondo and spot putty to smooth the rough castings takes a lot more time than I had originally anticipated. Put a little on, sand a little off, so on and so on.

My wife says that I'm my own worst critic, that is I've been known to redo more than a few things only because they didn't please me when they were finished the 1st time around.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

The main reason we decided to disassemble, rebuild, and repaint the lathe was so that we would know if it needed attention before we started using the lathe. This way we could take care of all minor problems before they damaged other parts beyond repair. This casting is an internal part of the gearbox and after a close look-see we spotted a hairline crack in the casting at the point of the arrow.

Look closer at this macro picture and you can now easily see the break in the casting. This is not just a crack as we originally had thought, After disassembly we find that the two shafts that are a part of this assembly were actually the only thing that was holding the two pieces together. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Since there is very little stress on this assembly I will most likely make a repair by brazing this piece over the weekend. I'll take a closer look at it at that time and post another picture after the repair has been made.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

Well more rain today in Ohio, not much one can do outside in this weather and since the garden is a mud hole we headed back to the barn and made a bit more progress on our project.

We kept the broken gearbox casting loosely assembled to keep it in alignment while we laid the brass to it on the outside of the casting. Then we disassembled the shafts and bearings so we could braze it from the inside as well. I believe the casting is most likely now stronger than it was when it was new. I'll hit it with the POR-15 epoxy tomorrow before it's reassembled and put back into the lathe gearbox.
