Hi Mike,
Well if I recall I was crawling around in those gear boxes just about 35 years ago and Im 90% sure it was an epoxy paint. I wouldnt want to venture how many brain cells I killed doing that job /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But OSHA wasnt what it is today. So far Im still kickin, albeit a little slower /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Red Glyptal is what we used on the interior of oil filled electrical equipment. Never had a problem with it lifting off. The power plants used the same stuff on the interior of mechanical power transmission equipment.

Well it would seem as though you guys know a lot more about paint meeting oil than I do. You got me to thinking earlier about this paint subject so I asked this same question at the Practical Machinist web site that I'm a member of. Lots of guys over there are into rebuilding of old machinery and they recommended the very same thing as you tractor enthusiasts. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm now committed to pulling the gears back out of the headstock, stripping the casting and repainting it using a correct sealer. Better to do it now than after the paint has had a chance to flake off and affect the bearings within the headstock.

And this ought to teach me how to really be smooth at removing all the headstock gears for the second time around. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Oh, well I know what I'll be doing this weekend anyway........ Thanks for the heads up guys!

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

We used the same stuff on the inside of high performance engine blocks and heads. You just have to make sure all the oil residue is out of the pores of the cast iron, best time to paint was right out of the boiling tank. In your case, a lot of soapy water and/or a pressure washer should do the trick.............

Scotty it was my fault for not doing my homework.

Randy thanks for the offer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm off to eBay to see if I can find some epoxy paint......

Here's a shot of just a few of the parts from the gearbox as they are being cleaned and inspected prior to re-assembly.

As the smaller parts are spray painted they are placed on this makeshift table until the masking tape can be removed and any over-spray cleaned up. The painted parts seem to be never ending.

Re: 3800 Pound South Bend 17\" Turn-Nado Lathe Project

We finally got the enamel stripped of the inside of the gearbox and the headstock castings. We decided on using a product called POR-15 to paint and seal the inside of all the castings. If any of you have ever used paint-over-rust products you know that it takes a bit of special preparation prior to painting with them.

We 1st used a chemical called Marine Clean to clean any residual oil or old paint stripper left behind from the pores of the castings followed by a clear water rinse.

We then used a chemical called Metal Prep which was mildly acidic and etched the metal giving the POR-15 a good base to adhere to.

Then we followed up with two brushed coats of silver POR-15 paint which cures out to a rock hard finish. Although you can use lacquer thinner as cleanup before the paint cures, nothing will touch it after it has dried. Once cured this stuff is impervious to all chemicals and cleaners, I can testify to that since I made the mistake of getting a bit of the paint on the back of my arm and it dried before I knew it was there. It's been there now for 5 days although I'm wearing the skin down with a washcloth each time that I shower. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Here's a shot of the gearbox as it's being reassembled while resting on my workbench. As it goes back together each bearing is being checked and any that are questionable will be replaced.
