Well, you guys got me excited about the pond so I took some photos.
Loretta and I walked around an area on the South side of our home. It slopes away from the home and lawn down a gulley with gentle side slopes to it. Our home is North and uphill of it and the sides East and West are natural ground. Those will be 3 sides of the pond.
In this first photo below, you can see down the gulley and how the side slopes are. The second photo shows a view from down below looking back up (North) to our home.



These other photos show a little more of the area.



We will have to clear some of the trees away (I think), and build a **** at the bottom (South End). But first I need to spend a month re-reading Eddie's Lake Maribu project to get all the ideas and how to prepare everything. In the mean time, I'm sure I'll be getting on with putting the pvc underground lawn system in first.

I know from building my pond, how it looked before and after, that your pond will be awesome. The photos look like the pond will have natural depth. How deep do you plan on making it? Down here, I was told to not take my pond over 8 feet of water depth.

I also read your thread all the time. I know you have a water tank for firefighting, but you can not ever have a too much water when fighting a fire!

Since you are building a pond and you live in an area with no fire hydrants, you may want to consider installing a dry hydrant for the fire department to draw water from the pond. Here is a web site that give you details.

Rob, are you and Loretta going to work in tandem to build the pond? You dig and she moves the dirt. Mark and I have done this before and things go a lot faster. Or did you go down the hill and buy that D8? Should I get Mark to haul up my 7520 and the dozer? I bet with all of us going at it we could get that thing done in short order. But then you would get less seat time, and that may not be a good thing. It would be cool though to have a video of 3-4 tractors building it. I wonder how long it would actually take.

Hi Brandi,
Yes, that area does have natural depth depending on how far (up to the home) it comes.
I know nothing about pond building other than what I've learned from you guys on TBN, so the maximum depth is a mystery to me. Our plan is to move some dirt from the high side down towards the dam side and then build the dam up from that. Otherwise the pond would end up way down below.

You are right about the pond being awesome.
There are fingers to smaller gulleys on the East side that run into this main draw. I visualize them fill up somewhat (depending how full it gets) to give the pond some character and natural shape as it goes up the landscape. Much like that table I just got through making. Loretta and I today are going to stake what we think will be the perimeters to see where the water level will take the final shape of the pond ... that is how the water will find it's own level going up those fingers. It will also tell us what trees, if any, need to be removed. It will also tell us how far up the gulley and how deep the dam needs to be to get the pond to sit at a reasonable distance and location from the home.
