Thanks Tony. We are excited too since it's getting pretty close to being finished. That's when all the other work will start though, like you are doing. I'll be working around the home to get the lawn and garden in shape. Laying irrigation pipes for that and the hillside will be a lot of work yet. Then there is the finish grading I have to do for water run-off and landscaping etc. Don't forget moving either, we are in the midst of getting all our stuff up there each visit.
Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed those videos too. I thought they were pretty cool too.:)

I am going to the property today for the annual Memorial day campout with all my kids and grandkids.
It should be a fun time even though we will still have a few home related/moving chores to do. But it will be a nice break for us.
One thing I wanted to do was get the biggest machine up there which is my 16" swing Accra Turn lathe. I was not sure if the trailer would handle it nor was I sure I could even load it with the Komatsu forklift I have at home. So I stripped it down taking off all the accessories such as the 3 jaw and 4 jaw chuck, splash guard, steady rest and follow rest, tail stock etc. It weighed just under 5,000lbs that way. Loretta had to get on the back of the forklift so it would,'t tip over when loading it from the side, but we got it on there and centered up pretty good. I got the rest of the accessories in a steel cabinet plus a granite surface plate and stand on the trailer too. Including the trailer itself, the load is right at the 7,000lb limit now.

I wanted to get that up there because the builder has a GradeAll forklift at the site and I can use that to get it off. Otherwise there would be no way to do it except maybe use a chain hoist. But then I still couldn't move it because my forklift is not an off road type. But once I get it into the building, I can move it with the fork lift after I get it up there. It will be the last to go because I have to use it to load the remaining machines here at home. That little fork truck weighs 5,600lbs naked, but I think I can drive it onto the trailer and use my winch if I have to. For sure I'm getting my money's worth out of this trailer. It would cost a fortune to hire a machinery mover. Once up there, you never know if they will be able to negotiate the dirt driveway either. So this is working out real good for us.
You'll notice I put a sheet of 3/4" plywood down to help distribute the weight and keep the feet from going through the 2x6's.

Thanks Lee, I guess you are probably right about that.
We are enjoying (and appreciating) this project very much. Some of it is pretty tough work and getting older doesn't help with the aches and pains, if you know what I mean.:)
BTW, what is that in your Avatar?
Is that a Nubian or maybe a Boer goat
?

Thanks for noticing him. He is a full blood Boer and our primary herd sire. He's a good one.:)

Rob, it must be really exciting to be moving. I remember when I first started moving into my new house that every piece of furniture or equipment was exciting. I think you are right about the trailer. It doesn't take long for a utility trailer to pay for itself many times.

I was really shocked to see how wide your front staircase is to your house. That ramp to the garage has a pretty steep angle too. I'm thinking they didn't finish them because they want to discourage the construction crew from grinding dirt into them before they are finished. I could be wrong, but that's what came to mind when I saw those gaps.

It's a joy for me to come to this thread from time-to-time and look at the amazing artistry and function you are building into your retirement home. It is easily the most stressful thing you will ever do to have to make all the thousands of decisions along the way. The reward is also worth it. Your place is a picture postcard of a dream that is coming true.:)

Rob,

I tried to load a fork truck onto my 16' trailer one time and completely destroyed my ramps. The fork truck was so short that it had all it's weight on the ramps at one time. You may want to make sure you really reinforce the ramps before starting.

Rob,

I am excited for you guys!! It is hard to describe the feeling of moving into a new home. Wish I was close by to lend a helping hand. Your place looks fantastic and I am sure you and Mrs. 3RRL are about to bust from the anticipation of the first nights at your new home.

It is a labor of love making a house a home...enjoy!

Did somebody sell plans for a table like that in the past? I have one that looks just like it, except mine has steel casters under it. Even the same color, so what is with that?
David from jax

I don't have a lathe like that, so before you unload it, send it my way so I can start copying it. I will send it back as soon as I have all the parts made to make my own lathe.
