Greetings,

This is a great website and I appreciate the support that I have seen throughout the various forums. I have posted a description of my project in the Projects forum and you can read about it by clicking on the link (I hope this works.)

I think that what I need for this project is something around 35HP - and I am partial to JD. That being said I have found a tractor that I think could do the job and would like your opinion as to price, quality, etc.

4500
2001 Year Model
460 FEL
4WD Power Reverser Transmission
500 Hours
R-1 Tires
Asking Price $14,500

I am also interested in the 4300, 4310, 4400, 4410 and any comments (or leads on available tractors) regarding those models would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I have not been following prices on 4500's recently, however that seems within the ballpark. I have a similarly equipped 1999 model, it has been a great tractor.

Have you priced a 4510 with a 460 loader? I would guess in the 23-24k range, if so 14k is 60% of new value. If I have to pay more than 60%, I usually buy new.

Thanks for the feedback Eric. I have not gotten a quote on the 4510... it is not on the JD website. I have checked out the configurator for a 4310 and a 430 FEL - with my options it came out to $24,345 MSRP. I got a quote for this configuration from a dealer in Virginia for $19,975 which include the 300CX loader in place of the 430.

My goal is to re-sell the tractor in a year or so and I figure that if I buy new I will probably lose $3000-4000 but if I buy the used 4500 at $14,500 I should be able to sell it a year from now for at least $13,000.

Does this make sense... or am I dreaming.

Just checked out the 4500 today... it has a cracked hood and it might be burning a little oil (there was a fair amount of soot on the loader arm next to the exhaust.) I have not noticed this on other tractors that I have looked at.

Is this indicative of burning oil or is it fairly common? Any ideas on fixing or replacing the hood?

Thanks for the feedback.

I have a 4500, same year as yours that you are looking at.
Has 1020 hrs and burns no oil.
I have tryed to sell it at 13000 and got no bites.
Not even any lookers.
It is not rough but it is not mint either.
oil changed & repairs made when needed.
I actually think that the one wyou are looking at may be at a good price.
Also the 5205 i just traded in with 88 hrs on it, I got 21500 for it.
Just bought it sept 8 & traded for a 4720 loaded.
But the dealer has it now for 24500.
I was offered $9500 for the 4500 if I would have traded it in.
Makes you wonder.

Thanks for the response zipp. The $13000 and "no lookers" has me concerned because one of my requirements is that I will be able to re-sell this within a year. Maybe it's different here in Virginia.

I dont know either.
I think it all depends on the time of the year.
I did not run it in any big papers such as the sunday register.
I think with apr rates etc now that the newer tractors will be the thing to get now.
I wouls not let it scare you.
It is a nice tractor & I really wanted to get rid of my KUbota, which I did & so I was not too worried.
