Hi All,

It's been a while since I posted anything, just been hiding in the back round.

I have a 4510 and want to buy a disk for my tractor, I will be disking a few acres of land (food plots). The dealer has a 6'10 disk and stated I wouldn't have any problem pulling the disk, he also has an 8' disk which he claims I won't be able to pull, my question is will 14" make that much of a difference?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The soil is very sandy where I'm located in Michigan.

Thanks for the input.

With proper weights and a good cutting angle a disk pulls quite hard.

Food plots, small areas, get the small one or even smaller.

There's more than just overall width involved. Spacing between the disks (7 or 9 inches?) (which leads to the number of disks and contributes to the weight) - disk diameter & edge style (smooth/notched) and overall weight (including how heavy the frame is built) - how aggresively you set the gangs, and I think to some extent the mount style (3 point, drag, etc. - i.e. you might be able to pull it but not pick it up).

Example - We have an old fairly light 8 foot drag disk I'm sure you could pull, it's been used for decades behind a 2WD Ford NAA without issue. But I'm sure there are 8 and 9 foot units out there that are twice the weight and are a different story.

There's a lot of info out there on the web, although most of it is oriented to much larger tractors and sometimes it's tough to scale it down.

Here's one:

timb,

I think I need to ask some more questions, I did look at the disk, it's a nice heavy square tubing design, don't remember if the disk were notched or not, it has a ball screw type adjustment for the ganges and it's a 3-point.

I did ask the weight, it's 795lbs

Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem in sand, but for food plots and new ground I'd want notched over finish pans for chopping ability.

I don't know why the dealer thinks you won't be able to pull an 8'. If nothing else you can adjust the three point for depth and take a light cut. If you add weight and bury the unit up to the shafts, that might be a problem since sinking it into sand might be really easy.

I'd check the adustment with the unit on a 3 pt and slightly off the ground before buying. I've seen units that adjust easy on one side while the other side is a bear. That's new from the factory.

For a disk to do a proper job it takes a lot of HP to pull. Running around with no weight and no angles may be fun but really accomplishes little.

Thanks for the input all.

I'm going to do some more investigating yet. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Someone mentioned how aggressive you adjust the disk. Its been my experience we just set the angle of the disk gangs to a moderate setting and left it there. Is there a lot of advantages of moving the angles of the disk gangs for different soils? I.e. disking up weeds, or making a food plot?
