I need to reiterate that the ROPS mod was done for my own safety... it really is a no brainer in view of the way I was using the ROPS prior to the mod (partially folded and not secured). Another observation related to this thread is the use of the tractor seatbelt - as someone pointed out earlier, the seatbelt should be used at all times when the ROPS is up and in use. Well with my tractor the seat belt is very uncomfortable especially when reaching/looking back to operate the stabilizer controls (for example). In fact the belt is so uncomfortable that you are definitely inclined to say to heck with the seat belt and rely on gripping the ROPS in the event of a tip. (When connected the seat belt does not "give" at all even for slow movements that require a bit more length.) Perhaps a mod of the seat belt system is in order.

No rops = no seat belt. Rops up = seat belt on.

If you aren't wearing a belt and you begin to roll.... U gotta bail. Get away from tractor. If you have rops up and belted in... Hold steering wheel and go for the ride.

For $166.52 Messicks will sell you the top half of the ROPS for a BX25. I would put an OEM ROPS back on if I were to make such a change and then sell the tractor.

The best response yet and I was thinking along those lines.

If someone had the least bit of concern about resale down the line... problem solved.

Wonder if the top half for my BX 23 is priced similar?

It would be great to shorten it 2 inches!!!

Give Messicks or your local dealer a call and ask. The exploded parts diagrams for the BX23 (Kubota Tractor Corporation - Parts List) dont list a part number for the ROPS (its in the section under "hood/bonnet"), so you will probbaly need to call.

No local Dealers anymore... worth a call because I'm guessing freight won't be cheap... thing is the big Kubota Distribution Center is closer to me than any Dealer... no will call though... tried to do it with a tire/rim set.

Might call Messicks and ask. Their website lists the shipping cost at $21.75 for UPS ground from PA to NY.

The factory Rops was designed and tested for your own safety, It's not now,

As far as I'm concerned you should buy the correct factory top half, put it back on the tractor and use it properly like thousands of others do every day. Because Sir someday that tractor will be someone else's.
I would also have the guy that modified it pay for the top half. Then you will both feel better.
Please don't try and convince us that the right thing was done for your safety. I'm tired of reading how you both did it for your safety..

Holy Cow ....

Lot's of folks telling others how they should lead their lives ... Products of the "Nanny State," I guess!

The two gents involved, and after all the discussion, I'll stress the word "gents," thoroughly weighed all the pros and cons. Whether any of us would follow the same path is irrelevant. The job turned out nice, safe and useful .. And i still say that a modified ROPS that gets used is faaaaaar superior to an unmodified one folded down.

If I wanted or needed to cut my ROPS, I'd follow NIKE's lead, and "Just Do It!"

But, I had a Dad once, and I don't need, or want, another one!

Things are modified all the time... does anyone think a Boeing 747 was designed to carry the Space Shuttle on it's back?

I've built my own trailer hitches and trailers... fabricated the everything including the trailer ball and I sleep fine at night.

Uncle raced for years and outside of a few nuts and bolts there was nothing OEM on his Lola.

Ownership means you own it...

I'm a State Automotive Arbitrator and yes... manufacturers will often raise unauthorized modification/alteration as a defense... if I agree it means the owner no longer has the manufacture sitting at the table...

There is a local shop here that has more business than they can handle... they build custom fuel tanks for RV... have customers from all over North America simply because they provide a service few can or are willing to do.

The same could be said for custom coach builders... Ford or GM warranty the drive train... the rest is on the builder...

Sometimes it is just better to go ahead and do what you want to do, without broadcasting it to the world.
This might be one of those situations.
I cann,t believe some folks get so worked up about what other people are doing.
If it doesn,t affect posters personally, what is the problem ? Wowser !!!!
Sometimes it is just better to read, than write. LOL

Its just an opinion expressed on a message board. Take it or leave it, its already done so its not like he's going to change his mind. Just hate to see people lose everything over basically nothing.
