Is a slip hook harder or easier on the chain links (as far as potential for causing damage) compared to a grab hook?

Also, it would seem the short link type would be somewhat better in a slip application but maybe a little more difficult to work with grab hooks.

Yes. Slip hooks are easier on the chain.

That has been my experience too.

It is just as it sounds, the link is shorter and more rounded. I have a 3/8" in that configuration and do not like it much, you have to have the hooks almost at a right angle to the chain so they will slip on. It also holds the hook pointing out so when you pull the binders down they are at a 45 deg angle both the chain and hook. The one I have is in the bottom of the chain box and almost never gets used. Well my chain and binders arrived yesterday, 2 days after ordering. Great service. I laid out the 20 ft chains on the floor of the barn, measured the middle, then attempted to cut a link with my 18 inch bolt cutter. Mistake. Snapped a jaw. That grade 70 is hard stuff. I guess I'll put the cutting blade on the grinder this weekend.

Any chain that can be cut with an 18" bolt cutter is NOT a chain to be used hard with a tractor.
