5/16 vs 3/8 chain

I leant a 5/16 grade 70 chain to a guy so he could pull his 33k gvwr 6 wheel dump that was stuck out with his backhoe. It has been fine, although at the time I was kinda pissed because he could have used two chains to even the pull out. Truck had a good load of loam in it too

I have been switching to locking grab hooks for safety reasons

Yes, those Twist Lock hooks are very nice-we just started carrying them also. We are the first to have the new Twist lock SLIP Hook in stock, these fit 5/16" or 3/8" chain.

Tom, I've never saw a hook like that. That would be very handy in those times where you hook a loose chain, get on the tractor, look back, and it's unhooked........ Where do you find those?? I've never saw them in Farm Supply stores.Edit: Sorry, shoulda read on. I'll be checking out KennyD's selection!!!

Here is a quick video from the manufacturer:

That would be real good if it didnt have parts sticking out to snag and get jammed full of crud. As it is its only suitable for lab work.

True, they can snag grass, junk, etc. when dragging. I started using them after hoisting a 500 lb load, looking up to see the tip of the grab hook stuck into a link in the chain rather than as it should be. I was not under the load by any means but I don't need 500 lbs dropping due to not noticing a grab hook slipping out of position.

I do have a few chains which I will keep with standard grab hooks, but certainly not any chain I lift with.

Thank you, I looked high and low for a slip hook with a sturdy twist lock rather than those finky lever things that get in the way and bend. I never found the model you posted.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was very surprised at the price of chain out there. For chain and ratcheting binders for all 4 corners, I was looking at $300+ to buy local. For anyone out there that is looking, I ended up buying 2 - 20 ft chains, 4 hooks, and 4 ratchet binders for $209 shipping included at Mytee Products. Hooking them together with a grab hook is hard on the link so avoid the very hard pulls. Chain with the short link configuration is more resistant to damage from a grab hook. The chain does weigh more tho than std link.

Thanks guys for the replies. I have grab hooks on smaller chains but wasn't sure if larger stuff was different.

I think I'll cut mine and get extra grab hooks and a couple double clevis'.

Can you explain the short link configuration?

It is just as it sounds, the link is shorter and more rounded. I have a 3/8" in that configuration and do not like it much, you have to have the hooks almost at a right angle to the chain so they will slip on. It also holds the hook pointing out so when you pull the binders down they are at a 45 deg angle both the chain and hook. The one I have is in the bottom of the chain box and almost never gets used.
