Mowing 54 or 60 inch mmm

   / 54 or 60 inch mmm #21
I have the BX1830 with 54" mower because the 60" was too wide to fit between my mature trees on my lot. My Cub Cadet had the 48"" and 60" mowers and I really preferred the 48" although it did slow me down as I have more than 1 acre to cut.
As to my BX I don't care as seat time is seat time LOL.

I had an older Bx22 with a 54" and now a BX24 with a 60" Night and Day! I wish I got the 60" years ago and no issues with turning...

Thanks everyone for the great repsonses, look like selling the trailer (bought last year, still new little old lady only drove 1 or 2 times if anyone is interested :)) The 60 sounds like a better fit, onlly one more question is scalping an issue with the 60, new yard and its still really rough. Thanks again!

Anything is going to scalp if you cut too close, but I run my 60" and 62" the same height as my old 54" and there are no problems. I cut from 2 1/2" to 3" and I even use mine for walking paths for my wife in the woods and fields; no problems encountered so far; well there was that boat anchor in a field, but that is a whole other story.

1*I'm not concerned with the amount of seat time.
What concerns me is the extra trimming created.
The narrower the mower the more the trimming .

I could easly use a mower that stuck out at least 2 or 3 feet past the side of the tractor.

Shame they never made a 57" deck....Would fit for everyone half way.

I have a 60" deck and had a 5x8 Leonard heavy duty. Payload was 2000 lbs. The 60" mower is 63" wide tip to tip and the trailer was 60" fender to fender. I went on craigslist and found a new 6x12 that someone wanted to sell because it was too big for the city streets where he lived. I traded him mine plus $400 for the new one. I would sell mine and get a bigger one if I were you. The 60" mower is way better than the 54" I think. If you look you can find a new trailer pretty reasonable I bet.

I have a BX22 with 54" deck. Works great! My property has lots of trees, which is why I purchased the narrower deck. If I had large open fields, I would have possibly opted for the 60". The extra 6" is about a 10% wider mowing path, so in theory, You will cut 10% off your mowing time. Over time that would add up to time you could be doing something else...like helping the wife with inside chores, painting the house or maybe watching more football.

This whole thing is personal preference. I like my 54", others like their 60's...In the bigger scheme of things, does it really matter?

I cut 3 acres at my mom's house with a 48" JD GT275. No issue there at all.

Exactly, figure out which one works best for your needs and buy it. I have a 54" that hasn't been used in two years. I kept it when we bought a 62" 2305 because we though we might need it for trimming.
