5w40 Syn - even if warranty calls for 10w30??

If 5w-40 is what you want for cold winter starts and summer use in heat, and you want sythetic, consider Rotella T 5w-40. It's what I intend to use.

Availability. TSC, WalMart with Wally's price, its pretty hard to beat.

40w oil is not called for in his warranty. 10w30, 5w30 or 0w30 are all allowed. The 5w30 and 0w30 were all manufactured after his warranty was written up.

5w30 is what the dealer sells for my new VW TDI, for instance.

Amsoil is great stuff, and you will not go wrong using it. I have been using it since 1983, and do not use anything else. End of story. All my vehicle are synthetic engine, trans, and diffs. Tractors are engine only as I have to many hydraulic leaks to use synthetic there. One big difference with syns vers petroleums is that there is not an additive package in the syns. They are engineered as the weight and oil type that they are. Amsoil was one of the original designers and makers of syns and they were designed for the cold WI winters. Amsoil did not get on the synthetic band wagon when they realized they were losing sales to other oils. Amsoil was one of the starters of the synthetic oil revolution. The Shell is okay stuff, but for the couple of bucks more, get the amsiol. Besides, the last time I bought the shell for a 301A JD that burns oil, it was almost the same as the Amsoil. You can get a private party dealership for a few bucks a year and buy at wholesale levels. Shipping is where Amsoil will get you. If a warehouse is close go pick it up and save. I get mine from the Lancaster PA location when I have to go up there to sell hay at the auction. On 5 gallons, usually saves $20 on shipping. The Amsoil will stop the wear inside or engine, so you have to go through the normal break in period with petroleums. Do not know the recomendation for your tractor, but for cars and pickups it is usually 5K before you switch. Call tech at Amsoil, and they will put you on the right track. Bottom line, your engine will last forever on Amsoil.

GM warned against using synthetics until they got caught sending their vehicles to EPA for mileage testing with synthetics in them. GM knew you would get better mileage, and they would not sell anywhere near as many motors and parts if people found synthetics. Go GM!

The recommended oils are based on temperature.
NH states 30W or 15W40 or 10W30 or 5W30.

The one thing I've noted is that 95% of the diesel CJ-4 that you can find is the 15W40 ....... the others are difficult to locate.

MF (AGCO) does not have a problem with it, if they had their own synthetic oils, (like JD does.) I would buy from them.

I did a casual "reminder search" last night.
Whether or not MF (AGCO) knows, doesn't know, or chooses to not comment may be beside the point - or may have motive.
The point is that polymers are used as viscosity range extenders in mineral AND synthetic oils, they "burn" under lower rings and it is the burned deposits that are the problem.
The wider the range the more polymers, the more polymers the worse the condition.
They loose their range very quickly too, as the polymers burn off, so the wide range isn't there for very long anyway.
I guess I should say "POTENTIAL PROBLEM", since any number of folk will chime in with their anecdotal "I've used xWy0 on n vehicle engines for decades", etc. believing THAT to provide statistically valid guidance (-:

Besides all that do any of us really NEED such wide viscosity range oils ?
(Assuming that they keep that range... which they don't)
Are we living in conditions that require or even benefit from 5W or 0W for cold starting AND 40 or 50 for high temperatures ?
or are we putting 100 or more hours on a year and changing oil twice a year anyway ?

NO ONE makes a 10w30 or 5w30 CJ4 synthetic oil, and I am NOT going to run Dino. Not running 0w20, that is below what is called for.

That is the dilemma.

My current machine only takes 3.5 qts of oil and I just bought a case of PureOne filters .............. So I will be changing it about every 25 hours ..... to me it doesn't much matter if it's dino or synth.

A long time ago GM used to warn specifically AGAINST the use of wide viscosity range oils in diesel engines.
Something about viscosity range extender "residue" accumulating under bottom rings and leading to ring failure - as I said, long time ago so I'm not remembering the details at all clearly.

It might be worth a search though.
That is right about wide range multi when talking Dino oils because they need more extender additive to get the range. Syns are OK because they naturally change viscosity less as T rises. They need much less additive to get a broad Multi visc range. [ie: They have a high viscosity index]

I would go with 5w40 or 0w40 then. Shame - at your latitude the 30's would be the best ticket. Not a safety/damage issue, but a microscopic decrease in efficiency moving the heavier oil thru the hydrodynamic bearing shear zones.

Well from as cold as (or colder) -50c(-58f) in the winter to (or hotter) +40c(104F) the benefits of syn outweigh the benefits of dino. Also, this is our main tractor now, so 150 hours will probably be the minimum we hit.
