I think you better wait till you get the trailer. I don't know what that box is he is touching, I think its a charger based on the wiring going to battery etc. I don't have that in my unit. I have the pump and the yellow control, you have some addons over me.

LOL you said it had a charger. you may want to just setup the 7 pin for charging if your not close to an outlet, being a durango or dakota, I would think it would be setup to have 7 pin wiring from the factory.

I can give you a link to a 30w solar mppt charger if you want to go that way as well. it works well.
Yes, I'm interested in a solar charger. Will do some more investigating to see if the Dakota is set up for 7-pin. I used a wiring kit to plug in the 4-pin several years ago and now have added a 7-pin that plugs into the 4-pin so can use either one.
I could connect the 12VDC pin to the wire going to the 50amp anderson on the pickup rear bumper but it would be hot all the time unless I switched the breaker off under the hood.

here is the solar kit I use.

the solar charger generally has it charged by the next day. I think I would hold off and see if you actually need charging from the truck. I doubt you will

OK. Thanks for the link. Looks like a nice setup!

i can throw a meter on mine, but I remotely doubt its pulling 130 amps. the wiring for my winch is 2x the size of this and barely pulls 100 on full load
Are you running 2AWG to your winch?

That's a better looking unit than my SureTrac dump trailer. It has the same payload but mine has tiny little 10" wheels which don't lift it off the ground high enough to fully dump.

I looked at the SureTrac as well as the LoadTrail version with the 10" wheels. I like the compactness but not the narrow stance of them. I haven't seen anything similar to the Norstar single axle 5x10 dump for the price.

I wish mine had a wider stance. It's the perfect weight to pull behind my Colorado but should also have brakes.

I'm planning to install some wood side board extensions on the trailer and the stake pockets measure a full 2"x4" inside to inside. Anyone know why they are so much larger than 1-1/2"x 3-1/2" a standard 2by4? Must be a reason but not very handy for standard lumber.

I own the same one, Destroyed the license plate. I agree, do they think dump trailers only sit on paved roads?

Go for it. The battery will limit the current it pulls with its internal resistance.

I have a pair of 8AWG from the battery to the rear Anderson 50amp receptacle. Would like to connect this to the trailer battery but concerned about how much amperage a low battery at either end would try to pull. I do have a 60 amp breaker switch in the line.
Anyone care to guess how the 8AWG would fare with about 22 ft total length?

60 amps is over the rating for 8 gauge but that’s intended for continuous use and includes enough safety margin for your house not to catch on fire. The 8 gauge would almost definitely be fine for the amount of time it takes to cycle the dump trailer with 60 amps. 8 gauge romex is rated for 40 amps but 8 gauge THHN wire is rated for 55 amps.

Thanks! That is some feedback I've been looking for. I've been using the 8AWG and 60 amp breaker to drive a 3500lb winch under heavy load but don't know how many amps it pulls.

The pic below is the nameplate on the trailer pump showing 1.6KW which equates to around 130amps at 12VDC. Can I assume that the pump motor would just slow down and not burn out if that amperage was cut in half or would it soon trip the 60amp breaker?

Yes, I've looked at the wire gauge charts but there are so many variables in the real world.

Low power input is what burn electric motors under a load up, such as on winches.

Yes, there are many variables, but that's the whole idea with those charts. Can't just go by amp draw for a given size, the length plays a big role, too.

little over 20 amp for the beginning, that's about it.

You're pretty close according to this chart showing 8AWG pair delivering 22-24 amp at a total length of 50 ft. (Have to double the length of one wire)

i have an rv with a similar run, with dual 8's its about all i see.

Does your rv have its own battery and, if so, how long does it take to transfer charge, from the vehicle, a low battery on the rv with the 8's?
