790 on Trailer

My tractor happened to be on the trailer, I happened to think about it and the camera happened to be handy. The subject of trailer length versus tractor length has come up so here's a couple of shots to show my situation. First shot is the ever-important rear showing the rotary cutter hanging off the back. Trailer is 18 feet long, 16 feet flat with 2 feet in the dovetail. The next photo will show the FEL bucket up against the front bulkhead of the trailer. As you can see, I've got a decent fit. Also a pretty excited operator on board /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Here's the front. Now why, you ask didn't I just back up and take it all with one photo? Good question. Too much clutter in the way and it was way too hot to be doing a whole lot of de-cluttering just for a lousy photograph today. Basically, I was being lazy /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Boy, that does look shiney doesn't it. Nothing special, trust me. I did give it a pretty good bath a month or so ago and haven't used it much lately. I did some hogging yesterday and everything was covered with dust. My eight year old has been on a money-earning spree lately so I paid him to wash the truck, tractor and trailer. I guess he did a better job than I thought /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Rob; What type/brand of container is that on the front of the trailer? Are you happy with it? Does it ever get in the way of stepping over the tongue (when chaining down, etc.)? I am thinking about adding a box such as yours to my trailer, to carry wheel chocks, tie-down straps, etc. I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Will, that box on the tongue was one of my best value additions. The box is a plastic Contico box from Wally World (on sale last year for $25). I had to add an angle iron support for the rear and the front sits right on the trailer frame. I keep all my chains and straps in there. There is stilll plenty of clearance to climb over the tongue and the box gives me a great work surface when it's closed. The only downside is this box has no latch. It has holes for locks which I use but it's not quite as convenient as a latch. I have seen the same box with a latch but of course, it's more money.

Before I put this box on I picked up a free pickup bed tool box. It was from a mini-pickup but still turned out to be too wide for turning. This box is only about 3 feet wide /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Looks good. Wish my 790 was that shiney. Mine is exaclty like yours, except I have R4s and I have a canopy on mine. Hows your 513 rotary cutter holding up? Mine has been welded twice in the back skirt and now I just noticed that I have cut a big gouge in the front where one of the blades must have gotten kicked up into the very "THIN" /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif sheet metal. I wish deere had designed this rotary cutter a little more durable.

Rob; Thanks a bunch. It sounds like just what I have been looking for. I priced out diamond plated box shaped specially for the tongue, but at 200.00, well, you have to draw the line someplace!!

I know just what you mean. I can't use one of those tongue mount boxes because my tongue has my hydraulics and control for tilting my bed as well as my jack stand mounted in the center. Side mount is my only option but underbed boxes are too big and even rail top boxes for a pickup are too deep to mount on the side of the flatbed. I even considered those boxes to go in pickup beds over the wheel wells but those would be too high over the fenders. I finally found top load boxes without the over the fender portions that would work perfectly. I figured I could use two to four of them for all my chains, binders, straps, lights, etc., but they were $170 each. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Those are Ag ( agricultural tires ) , and THEY ARE NICE!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif What size are they? They compliment that tractor nicely!! ( This is coming from a hardcore MF FAN!! )

Wow, you guys are diging up the past. Tractor hasn't been that clean in quite some time. Yes, tires are R1 ags size 12.4X16. I've seen a different size R1 on 790s with a two piece rim. I like these tires but they will do a number on soft turf. Fortunately, we don't yet have much genuine lawn.

Now that we've moved, I don't trailer the tractor nearly as much so I should be able to avoid the chain police /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
