8FT VS 10 MX

I love the look of having open land that is green as a golf course

Don't need any more justification than that satisfaction..

I do too, but it's 6-8 acres. ;) And as long as you can afford it, go for it.

Double posted for me too. What's up?

You don't have 85 hp. They advertise 85 hp but you really have around 70 use able (Read: At the PTO). I have the older brother the 5083E with an MX10. In heavy cutting, I have just enough hp to run at around 4 mph. I'm talking grass as high as the front tires. If your clipping a pasture, sure. 15 footer would be a great addition.
Ditto.

70 PTO HP is more than enough for a 10 foot cutter.

I've pulled a Bush Hog 3210 a few times with a 45 HP tractor though knee high weeds and it didn't even phase it at 6 mph.

I beg to differ from my personal experience. I have 70 PTO HP and pull the MX10 and I wish I had more horsepower at times. When I get into thick grass or start chopping up some overgrown bushes, Even at 4mph I have to slow down to keep the tractor from bogging down to badly. Grass maybe a little bit thicker up north my way? If I get into a large ant hill or an uneven patch where I start mowing dirt, it really bogs the tractor down. Open fields, as long as I can stay in the seat, I can mow it.

The 5085E has enough HP to mow with the MX10, if you are keeping up with your mowing (more than once or twice a year) then I don't see any problem with a 15 footer especially if your mowing 50 acres!

I suppose its varies.

In my experience I definitely can be underpowered running a 10 footer with only 45 PTO, but I've yet to be underpowered with a 10 footer and 70 PTO. Then again I have certain "rules" so to speak on how I mow and what speed and height to cut at.

I mow a lot of orchards where the grass rarely gets more than a foot tall before it is mowed again, so even a 40-50 PTO tractor can handle a 10-15 cutter with ease at 5-7 MPH.

When I have to mow thick and stall stuff I go really slow. Usually 2-3MPH. In that case I often can be underpowered with 40-50PTO but rarely with 70PTO.

You can have 200hp and still find times to BG a 10’ cutter.

The only time I'll agree that your cutter is too big, is when you bog and stall in your lowest gear.

THANKS everyone for the help and feedback. I'll let everyone know what I decide to do over the next couple weeks. Summer is winding down and I won't have to mow as much, so I have to figure if now is a better time to trade considering my MX8 is brand new.

I just ordered a 5085e. I think the mx 10 looks perfect for it. I mow 28 acres not including roads etc. I think the mx10 would be perfect for me. In your case an mx 10 or 12 batwing would be perfect.

Just remember that your going to need some front end weight with the MX10, I run with the loader on the majority of the time and I won't even attempt it without 4 suitcase weights on the front end.
