rebuilding as A correct?

did you check the reg to make sure it is A?

I was actually just looking around the internet at pictures of A vs B regulators to 100% confirm it is an A type before rebuilding it that way.

Ha ha, never mind. image.jpg
I think this should confirm it, don't think I had noticed the writing before now!

The guy I bought the tractor from said he replaced the regulator with a new one because the old one was no good. I'm betting it had a b circuit reg on it when he got it, and it was the generator that was shot since the insulation on the fields was almost non existent.

yup, and he bought the corr3ct one listed and got an A and it didn't charge after that.

Ok, I thought I had this thing figured out after last night, but I'm still having problems somewhere. I put the generator back on checked wire connections and polarized (touched batt. to arm., good spark). I tested battery voltage at 6.3v (fresh off charger last night). Tractor started up strong, I set it to about 1/3 throttle and tested voltage at battery, still 6.3v. So then I jumped out batt. to arm. and tested again, still 6.3v. Moving on (with batt. Still connected to arm.) I grounded the field stud at the generator and still no change.... So I took wire back off and removed the belt from the genny. I then grounded the field stud to the case and applied batt. to arm. The generator immediately started spinning at what looked like close to tractor idle speed. I have checked and rechecked wiring and everything seems to be correct and in good condition(brand new harness). This should polarize batt to arm since it is rebuilt as an A circuit even though it's a different model right?

Success!! Turns out I had the ground wire and field wire from generator to regulator switched. The wire colors on this harness don't match the original colors (and of course didn't come with a diagram) and from the length of the wires they fit better on the wrong terminals. So now it's making power and the regulator is good and I have a brand new charging system!

yup, wireing in the harness was one thing i speculated on earlier. I never trust them till i verify with an ohm meter.

The only thing is both wires were flipped on both ends of the line, and I don't see on the wiring diagram where this would be a problem as long as the wire on F at the genny went to F at the regulator, and ground went to ground.....I don't think I made any other changes when I switched these two wires, but it seems hard for me to understand how the system could care what color the wires are as long as they go where they Are supposed to. At any rate, I do have a much better understanding of the whole charging system now (I realize there isn't actually a little wizard tucked inside the regulator and generator). This is one of the reasons I like this old tractor. I can work on and fix this thing with just a handful of everyday tools and a little knowledge, and I'm learning from it. I now understand the intricacies of how carburetors, generators and voltage regulators, and distributors work, and hopefully I'll get time to work on the hydraulics soon. This website is definitely an awesome resource for learning!

The ground wire is redundant, it it was open and switched with field, then field would be open.

As long as reg and Genny see each other via chassis, field and arm are the only ones that matter, thus one wire in the harness COULD be bad
