$900 rebate from JD

Geez you guys you make it sound like the john deere 4000 series was the worst tractor ever made! I wouldn't trade mine for a new one. Not that they wouldn't be a little better but the one I have is a total workhorse and has not let me down one time. I work the heck out of this thing and it just keeps going full bore. Yes they had a few things to work out in the beginning but they are not a bad machine at all. I started a thread awhile back on repairs and there were just as many repairs to other tractors as the 4000 series. They are a solid little tractor and the only reason that they are being given this bad name is because this kind of talk. Yes I know some of you had alot of problems with one but I've talked to owners of kubotas that have had alot of problems too. My one neighbor can't even give his kubota 4wd away because the front wheel drive keeps going out of it. All kubota will do for him is extend him warranty. My other neighbor traded his kubota off in about six months because the hydraulics kept overheating and kubota wouldn't do anything about it. I have another friend that had one and it was gutless and numerous other problems, 4610. He had it to the shop 23 times in a year. They fixed alot of the stuff but kubota wouldn't do anything about the power, even after the dealer said the power was not where it should be but they couldn't find the problem. He had to take them to court to have them buy it back. I'm not badmouthing kubota but they have their problems too. Yes they are sending out rebates to clear the lots of the leftovers. So what's wrong with that? Every car dealer and mfg. in the world does the same thing to clear out last years stock.

Doc,
I have had problems with mine, I know you rub shoulders with the John Deere boys. If the 4000 series are so great how come they upgraded to a 4010 seres and my 4000 series is a discontinued model under warranty? The dealers want rid of the 4000 series in the worse way,I had plenty of problems with mine and I stll am having some problems which the dealer is going to have to address.$900 is a joke when you are talking $20000. I know 2 dealers that said they are not ordering anymore, when my tractor was up fort repairs there were about four other 4000 series setting up there getting repairs made. Go figure!!!

Doc,

My comment on not buying or trading for a 4000 now was not motivated by the problems that some 4000s have had. My point is that $900 wouldnt induce me to buy or trade for any tractor when I new a brand new series, with many supposed improvements and new features, is right around the corner. I'd rather spend a little more money for the new product. Also, if the new 4010 is really hot, the dealers may be willing to sell off their old 4000 series inventory at really deep discounts for those who want them.

Glen,
Amen to that $900,when I get home I will type up the wording on the "re-bate" John deere even admits problems that they have improved on,they literally say they have made "hundreds of improvements". I plan on keeping my JD 4400 unless I come up with a deal I cannot refuse(or I run into problems that would make me want to dump it while it is under warranty). I would like to see John Deere give me an extension of my warranty in lieu of the $900,but the motive is to move tractors not appease current John Deere 4000 series owners.

I agree with you, cowboydoc. So much whining going on, that it makes it sound like the 4000's are bad tractors. They are not! Also, if just a few people (even one per dealer or less) take advantage of the $900 ($800 for me) trade-in incentive, it will be good for JD. The extra 4000's will likely move off the lots, and make room for new ones. Sounds like JD has a good marketing strategy to me. But, I won't trade now.
For those who don't like the deal, don't worry yourself about it, and don't trade up now. Wait for the new 4x10's, and be happy with your life.

Beenthere,
There is a difference between whining and stating the facts from personal experience on my part,I like my JD 4400,but I have not been pleased with the problems I have had,I have been satisfied with John Deere resolving of my problems, although the tractor still has to go back for some more work.A $900 re-bate would be good for John Deere, but I am not so sure I could work a deal that would be practical as of yet.Every tractor can have problems true. John Deere must have recognized some problems to have discontinued the 4000 series this early in the game and introduce a new 4010 series.

I agree with Cowboydoc. My 4400 has been great. In the shop now for some minor stuff. On the subject of the new 4x10 series, any company that does not continue to update and improve their products will eventually find themselves in deep do-do. I've designed and built products for 30 years and have yet to design or build a perfect one.

Hillbilly,
I would be more worried if JD didn't come up with a new design. Everyone that is in business looks to upgrade their product and come out with a new model. There were over 2200 supposed upgrades from my 95 to my 00 Ford truck that I bought. Yes every new design that comes out has hundreds of new improvements. Like I said everyone has problems. I'm sorry you've had so many. All in all though JD has the best service record of any compact tractor. I know how it is when you have something that people can't get right and how frustrating it can be. Just like my friends that had kubota and bad mouth them to no end. Well kubota is not a bad tractor and neither are the models that they had. They just got a hold of a bad one. As far as industry goes I rub shoulders with just about everyone out there. I am also the company doctor for the kubota dealership and their primary doctor for their health insurance. The $900 in addition to invoice pricing will make for a pretty sweet deal on a tractor. It's basically the same thing that automakers do to clear out their inventory. You can bet that the new ones will be sold for near market value.

Now with that said I resent the fact and take offense that you think that I would compromise ethics to promote something I did not agree with or that I would stoop to the level of calling up a jd exec. to make the same statement. I am merely writing from what I directly observe and my own exp. with the equipment.

Cowboydoc,

Curious where this information comes from? Would this be within a certain horsepower range? Certain model? Certain weight class?
