a gun....a tool?

Mark -- I was actually looking for a .243 when I stumbled across the 6.5. .223 was too small, and a .270's kick was a bit much for my delicate other half. But I liked the feel of the Ruger, and the shop gave me a great trade-in on my 10/22T. The kick is about the same as a .260, and it's LOUD! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The trigger is stiff, but so were those on military firearms I learned on. Still, I'm looking to reduce it to the 2 1/2# range in the near future.

The 336 is a fine piece! Not the most accurate (lever action), but that big hunk of lead is very effective! Unfortunately, while it's great in the brush, the .35 Rem has to be placed carefully lest you shatter bone and ruin a heck of a lot of meat. And being a New Englander, I detest waste!

I was trained to not aim at a person unless I intended to shoot, and not to shoot unless I intended to kill. Since the thought of harming a fellow American gives me the creeps, I've trained my dogs to bare fangs and growl ferociously on command...and the command is a Klingon phrase few people will ever stumble upon. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Amen to that F350Lawman.
Its just a tool.

A lot of people have life insurance. Don't plan to use, and pray not to need it, but when you need it you really need it!

For many people who live in the sticks the key question to ask your self is "how long will it take to get a deputy at my door". For many, you will likely conclude that the deputy, through no fault of his own, will be just in time to clean up the mess and write a report.

If you have the ability short guns and carry permits are the best solution. If not a shot gun is a good second choice. I would go with a 12 gauge or at least a 20. 410 is a toy.

In the home, the shotgun is the best tool...no real need to worry about aiming too well. And, in my opinion, a .410 will do quite well at that close range, if necessary to use the gun.

Now, outside...off your property, that carry gun does a fine job too IF you are confident in your abilities and will to use it.

I keep a 12 gage pump pretty handy and have trap/small game rounds close at hand. There's also full house double ought buckshot, but that would be pretty destructive to your furniishings and walls. For the .357 revolver, I keep it loaded with frangible rounds. These will do a great job on the intruder, but won't penetrate your walls so much. There have been cases where a .357 Magnum round went through a wall and killed an innocent by-stander in the next room.

On the subject of BB guns. We never owned any and never bought any for the kids. My husband, having infinitely more insight than me in many areas, convinced me that a BB gun gives the wrong image of gun use and are viewed as toys more often than not, but can easily put an eye out or be used incorrectly.

As if I needed some proof that he yet AGAIN knew what he was talking about, Jake earned some money and wanted to buy one. All his guns are locked in the safe, he has about seven of them, pellet gun, .22, .243. 30.06..... and got tired of always having to ask permission to take them out or wait for his dad to be around to target practice. Figured he could keep the BB gun in his room and use it whenever he wanted. I gave him credit for more sense than he had and let him buy it.

Several days later the electric meter reader lady came to my door all in a huff.

"What happened to the glass case on your meter, it's all busted up!"

"Whaaaat?"

I went with her to look and not only was it all busted up, but there were two or three BB's lodged in the little wheel that turns around and the meter had not been reading the usage for who knows how long. She was fit to be tied, acted like she thought I took money right out of her own wallet.

Fifty dollars to replace the glass case and an estimated bill.

Jake's reasoning was that that silly glass thingie had been hanging up there on that pole since we moved in and nobody was using it, it just hung there doing nothing so he used it for a target. Once I explained to him what it's use was he turned a little green and said.....'ooouuhhh'.

Sounded just like Tim Allen on Home Improvement. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well...............now you know. None of my business, but I can't help wondering if Mr. Crackshot will be paying for any of that damage.

I guess viewing a BB gun differently than any other firearm is a function of education.......

Like your sig pic, Ma'am.

Doc, don't be sad. When I say 'sense' I am referring to common sense, which we all know takes time to acquire. Let's face it, you and I know what a glass electric meter is for, he did not, lack of sense (common sense-experience) which will come in time.

KH, it was made for me by the ladies at Signature Country. It's just a tad bit bigger than I would like, but since they perform this service for free I wouldn't dream of asking them to change anything, and yes Mr Crackshot did have to help pay for the new glass cover. He made it up in extra chores. Live and learn. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If a kid can't handle a bb gun properly why in the heck would you let him carry a 30.06? Seems to me he should have had a bb gun first and learned to be responsible with that before he got any other guns.
