A hung up tree!!

I've taken 2-3 foot lengths off the bottom of hung up trees before, I prefer that over a come along, less going on and with clear exit paths I feel it is safer.

I have done both in the past. taken 2-3 foot lenghts off the bottom, and pulled the base out with a comealong.

We started with a comealong and when we had winched it back toward our anchor tree so much that there was no room left, and it still hadn't fallen, i decided to do it the more dangerous way of cutting sections off.

we had a line attached about half way up the tree for pulling on, and after we took 2 or 3 sections out it dropped low enough that we were able to finnally pull it through the other branches.

When you cut sections off the bottom you have a serious possibility of it rolling off to the side. In my case that was somewhat limited to the fact i was dropping i through several other trees the closest of which were larger and only a couple feet away which would limit how much it rolled if it did.

Well if the op'er is still with us or not, that's the thing ain't it.
If you don't know what to do about a hanging tree off the top of your head, it's time to sit back and have a smoke or a snort. And think about it.
Then if you still don't know then you get someone to look at it first hand because otherwise........well that's an open ended equation isn't it.

The op asked about a come along loading!!!???? Ya gotta be kidding me.

My original suggestion remains the same; get someone out there that'll show him how it can get done in 'relative' safety.

Was out last week cutting up some saw logs and I cut about a 18 inch diameter pine tree The other trees grew into the branches and when I fell the tree and came to wedge it over the hinge just broke. all I have is a snowmobile and a come along rated to 2 tons....do you guys think there would be enough strength to pull it down

Thanks for any info

Here is a link for weight of pine logs: https://utextension.tennessee.edu/publications/Documents/SP748.pdf

A 16" {small end, inside the bark} log 10' long weighs 1K. Don't know how tall your tree is, {if white pine it's about 50' high}, but it shouldn't be much more than 2 tons. Just get well back from hungup tree and start to pull.

A heavy tarp or canvas draped over the chain/cable/ strap should help if anything breaks or let's go too

Does the 75º mean it's only 15º from vertical? If so cutting at the base will just cause it to come closer to vertical and the direction of fall will become less predictable. If this is the case I'd say try pulling it instead of cutting. I'd put a choker around waist high on a big tree for a come-along anchor point and use a 30' tow strap to reach out and choke the falling tree. Give a few tugs and see if it starts to walk toward you. If it starts moving you could be home free.

If the tangled branches are big enough they could be more of a problem than just the weight. If the trunk just pivots up off the ground and the branches won't let go, then it's time to back off and formulate plan B.

On the other hand, if the 75º means that the tree is only 15º from horizontal, then I would recommend bucking lengths off the bottom first to make pulling easier. I haven't counted , but I guess this might be a good example of why a picture is worth a thousand words. 75º can mean two different things.

It's 15 degrees from vertical that's why I was thinking the come along it's scary when your standing by a 50 foot tree at 15 degrees from vertical cutting a section out
Thanks for the info I'll probably be working on that tomorrow I'll take some pictures and let you guys know
