A little hydraulic cylinder

My gatepost by my driveway are made using hyd cylinder rods. I cut one cylinder rod in half and the length after I cut them was around 10 foot. We had 2 lathes that had 40 foot long beds on them and would turn tie bars for the die cast machines we built. Many of the hyd cylinder we built and made parts for had any where from a 12 to 24 dia head on them and various lengths

Someone was thinking when they set that lathe up by the door.

That lathe weighs 13,000 lbs....after the initial install It took me almost all day to move it 3 feet to clear the door and get it leveled

Suddenly, I'm inspired to ask the guys at the local hydro-shop about rods/pieces they'd scrap. Might get a better deal than what I'm paying for stress proof to make bucket pins. (Hmm ...)

Anybody use 'em for that?

I'll tell you something else you might keep your eyes open for when it comes to pins. Truck and large engine piston pins.

Impressive cylinder. What is the bore and stroke on that thing?

We have a rather large cylinder at work on an aluminum press. 14" diameter and 120" stroke with a 10" rod.

That press is powered by 3 150HP motors each driving a 80GPM pump. With a 2000 gallon reservoir.

The cylinder I worked on was an 8" bore about 20" stroke with a 4" rod.
