John Miller and I are on a quest to show everyone that New York does not mean New York City, and that upstate New York is beautiful!! I'll have to come up with some pictures of the foothills of the Dacks (Adirondacks to non-upstaters) and the Green Mountains. In the meantime, here's a shot of my barn. Does this look like it's in New York City?

Another view coming up the driveway. No tall buildings in sight!

Two more residents of the barn. An Angora Goat (Ivory), and a Pygmy Goat (Brecka).

Well, Mike, here in upstate New York, they're not too bad. But when we lived on Long Island we paid $6000 per year on less than 1/4 acre with a tiny 4 room bungalow on it!!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Here in upstate New York, we pay about $1000 for 10 acres, a 3 bedroom farmhouse, a barn and a two car garage. Upstate sure is better!

Well, John, that would be a good move! Washington County IS the place to be!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Really though, since I'm new to the upstate area, I didn't know Rensselaer County was more expensive, than Washington County. I mean we're neighbors, but you do have the great city of Troy (where I'm sitting at this very moment!). Not to be nosey, but what do you pay? I mean comparatively, I know you have a lot more than 10 acres.

Hi Rich,

Uhh... I was wondering the same thing as John. I've only lived in NY for a bit more than 2 years and I'm still shocked everytime I think what property owners pay in taxes. Lots of life long residents have told me, in a tougue-in-cheek sort of way, that NY usually places first or second of all the states in personal tax burden. It varies from year to year but NY tends to be in the top two!

I still love it here though (even though I've yet to figure out the 8% sales tax in my head /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif).

Dave

PS- Great lookin' barn and critters.

Short answer... alot!

I own a 2 family across the river in Cohoes{Albany County} and that's about $3800./annually and in the dumpy part of the city, another property I recently bought in South Bethlehem {Albany County} will be approx. $4700/yr {don't have all the first year bills yet... are you sure we're talking the same state now Rich?

On this side of the river, a couple properties are about $4100/yr. {total}... I think you missed a tax bill somewhere along the line or something... to sleep on the sidewalk in NY would cost about $1000. or so... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Rich, Enjoyed the pictures very much. After high school I followed pipeline construction for a couple of years. On one of these stints I worked in a small town (Filmore) down in the southwest end of the state. Your barn reminds me of some of the small farms in that part of New York.

I still have memories of some of the finest people I have ever known. When I think of New York I don't think of tall buildings (at least before 9/11 I didn't). I think about all the friendly people I met while there. Southern hospitality can't compare!

Uh, well...now that you put it that way, I'd better check with my wife. She handles the finances, but that's what I thought! Boy I must be having a bad day! First I'm labeled as a misspeller, then a mistaxer. And you're the one giving me the labels!!!It's a good thing you're my buddy, I don't know what you'd do to me if you weren't!!!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
I'll check and post if I'm right tommorrow.

Thanks, TBone! In my opinion, people in upstate New York are the friendliest anywhere! When we were moving into our house, people from all over our little town showed up to help us move in! Then they would stop by periodically to ask if we needed any help with anything. Coming from Long Island, where people barely say hello to each other, we couldn't believe it! In my opinion, we live in paradise! We'll NEVER move!

Wow, only a $1000.00! does that include the school taxes as well? I know that what you pay is for the value of the property, do you also live in the barn?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Around here just the 10 acres would be over $1k. I am paying $6k for my house and 5 acres. I guess its location, location, location!

No selling needed here. Upstate New York is one of the nicest places in the north east. Equating it with NYC is a common mistake so I support your quest.

Could the barn be blocking your view? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
Nothing like living in the country.
My mother's parent would come out to the farm on the weekends. When I was a kid. If you stand in what used to be our front yard you can see the Renaissance center building in downtown Detroit.
I now live 40 miles from downtown Detroit and can't see any tall buildings yet. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
