The way the majors advertised it, when it started to become popular, was that it added 25% to the drawbar HP over the same model in a two wheel drive, and alot of that came from the rolling resistance of the front wheels.

Play logging with B7100:

Sometimes the load gets too heavy and we go from 4 wheel to two wheel mode. Usually if I'm trying to pull a log the bucket is filled with rocks to add front traction and keep it on the ground.

I have a 4WD JD 4400 I have been using to log with and I guarantee you if it was a 2WD drive tractor I had been using I would not have gotten a 1/10 done that I have gotten done with the 4WD and the 2WD would still be sitting in the woods STUCK. There is no way where I live and the terrain I have that a 2WD would work. If you even tried to go down in the woods in 2WD,going off of the hill you would go like a sled.

4 wd will always work better than 2wd, given everything else is equal
