A simple safety question?

I also happen to believe that allowing children to sit on or ride anywhere on a running tractor is a bad idea. I know, lots of folks have done it and nothing bad ever happened. I think they were fortunate nothing did go wrong. Tractors are not play toys, they can be risky enough for adults so why would you want to increase the risk of a child getting hurt? What if grandpa is riding the grand-twins on the old massey and he has a stroke or spell, or passes out?
This exact thing happened to an young man I know when he was 4 while cutting grass with his grandfather.. The small compact he was getting a ride on had a MMM. His grandfather had a mini stroke and dropped him. Luckily, the wide turfs just pushed him into the soft ground when it ran over him. Only had a few bruises.
Of the 2 children killed on farms in my community in years past (1 bucket,1 PTO ), both were pre-schoolers. I've found my young nephews (3 and 5) have far more fun playing on the gravel pile when they come to visit, than a passing interest in a tractor ride.

Yeah, yeah, I know,..another lengthy safety "lecture" by the tugboat Ho-Hum,... Yup, yer pays yer money and yer takes yer chances,...you can read it and take what you think is of value to you OR,..you can scrap it,..your choice, nobody twistin yer arm,...

mcd176: You are most welcome Mike! If your kid needs a "thrill-ride", why not take them to the carnival or county fair,...or Disney etc,....those rides have been set up and tested for safety in many ways. Your tractor is NOT a "thrill-ride" and most definitely has NOT been tested for the safety of "children".

Look through your manual, read the safety stickers on the tractor!! Did you think the manufacturer pasted them on for your entertainment? How many of those stickers concern "people in buckets"??

This is one area that "learning from experience" will be a lesson you'll have to live with, the rest of your life!! You'll not get much sleep!! THINK B-4 YOU ACT !!

CHEERS,...and for heaven sake,...Be Careful Out There !!

PS: We seem to have strayed from the "Child-aspect",.... once weened from mamma's paps and "all-growed-up" to big boys and girls,..you make your own judgement-calls,....

...BUT, when in charge of a "child" who does not YET have the "wisdom-of-experience" to decide what may be dangerous, . . it then BECOMES the responcibility of the adult to carefully weigh the situation PRIOR to "chancing" what "May or May NOT" ~create~ a crying,..screaming,.. or dead-silent child! Remember: ...the CHILD is "trusting" you to keep him safe,.. just watch their eyes as they look up to you for "good-judgement"!! (Try to KEEP their trust solid!) One "OOops"! can disolve that trusting look forever!

I personally dont like passengers unless its my little cousins on the 2210. They sit on my lap and I drive real slow to let them steer in the parking lot. I have to strech out the seat belt to as far as it can go to hold them onto my lap. Never in the bucket though. I wish my dad never started the practice of riding on the side of the 3720. It limits my visibility and now the little tool box has a large crack in it now from people sitting on it. I know its dangerouse so thats why I try to get away from the barn before my dad or whoever else tries to jump on. I figure when I get a tractor I want a cab on it so nobody can sit on the fender and so I can plow snow in warmth.

JD 3720--Jacob: I know it's difficult and a very awkward situation when its your dad,...(who should know better),....but just remember, when you take control of a piece of equipment,.... "YOU" become the Captain of the ship!

That means,.."YOU" are responcible for it and "any" passengers. If in doubt, just shut 'er down. Don't be afraid to tell your dad, that you feel responcible for him or anyone else that really should not be on it,..that he makes you nervous as you can't see properly and being nervous could cause an accident for which you would feel terrible!

Naturally it is "your" situation and you have to handle it in your own way. Do you think he would listen if you quoted some tractor safety stuff from TBN? But you have likely tried that already,...so handle it the best way you can and good luck to you!

I was about to start saying that my tractor has only one seat so it mean only one person on it when it came to my attention that city busses allow people standing while running a 40MPH....

Anyway... I don't take city bus and I don't take passenger on my tractor... not even on my lap. maybe I am way to sissy or maybe I just love the ones surronding me and I would not do anything to possibly hurt them.

RiZak : ......re: the city bus,......the Transit Co. is thinking only of "revenue"! The more folk they can "pack" in,....the more money in the fare box!

But re: the tractor,.... just "one" seat,.....is a message in itself from the people that designed the tractor. If they meant to invite more folk on,...surely they would have included, running boards and grab bars etc,.......no?

"Would you let a child ride in the bucket" was the question. Most peole here are answering on a risk percentage basis. My question centers on the kid in the bucket. What is that little one using to assess this as a safe practice or not. There is probably nothing like that going on in that kids head. He or she is just having a good time. But just what is this kid experiencing? I mean some building blocks must be happening. If so, what does these kind of assimilations portend for the kid's future? A week ago I saw a 5 year old kid riding on the gas tank of his fathers Road King. The helmet was as big as the rest of the kid. Lets say they made it home in one piece. What is now in this kids head as what's right to do for any future decisions in regard to his preservation? What don't you mind putting in there as a parent in regard to the above? As a parent, you aren't always gonna be around so just what is the good stuff you care to deposit in this kid?

I haven't checked the statistics for bucket/children accidents/fatalities,...but I absolutely "know" they happen! The ones that would never pass muster and be admitted to "Statistics" are the so-called "minor" accidents,...but still,..they are there and probably many scars to prove a story,...but NO statistics because they aren't fatalities nor gory enough.

However,...a tractor bucket was never designed, padded, tested or recommended by the manufacturer,..for use by children.

I too,..have neighbours who think I'm just over protective as do some on this forum,...and maybe so? Because of neighbours and others in this area where city folk have bought a couple acres and a new tractor,....I have either seen for myself or heard of situations that will not make the statistics.

Because a tractor is NOT "sprung" (like a car), it is "solid", as is every bump, pot hole or pebble. The bucket is also NOT "sprung" like a car seat etc. This means that buckets jiggle, wiggle and bounce,..Not "softly" but as a JOLT!!! A fast, hard, solid JOLT usually without warning, could be a combination quick back and forth side-to-side JOLT at the same time as the up-n-down JOLT! Knock you off balance so quick,..make your head spin!

These sort of JOLTS tend to cause many after-affects. "MOST", young children are not "experienced" enough to "prepare" for the unknown like an adult might tend to keep his head tucked forward, or keep a foot braced or at least one hand "ready" to grab something. The child "usually" is "trusting" the adult to make this a "fun" and "safe" ride.

However, some of those seemingly mild bumps, can easily JOLT the child off balance and bang their head on "solid" steel, . . maybe the kid is coming down as the bucket edge is coming up,.. Bashed his front teeth in,..Whacked his forhead on the chain hook,... . . . OR Bounced right out and rolled safely off to the side in a fit of laughter! Usually what accompanies one of these safe, "fun" rides is good, happy memories of a day at the farm and what more could anyone ask?

But the bucket with Children's blood and teeth scattered around is generally fairly well accompanied with loud, painfull child-screams, wailing, and yelling with a generous mixture of tears and blood,...often scars and memories for life and not necessarily "happy" memories of a day at the farm? "Your?" farm /property?.."Your?" tractor-bucket?.."YOUR?" "MEMORIES!!!

And YES! Most Certainly, by All means,..Of Course...the lad (or lassy) with the missing and broken teeth, black eye, bruised or scarred forehead,...walking funny and a slight problem speaking or seeing clearly, . . . could just as easily have gained these "personally-identifying" ..Marks, Scars and Defects,...... . . .

From "PLAYING" hockey, baseball, soccer or almost any sport you can name as well as the exciting rides like bikes, (pedal or moto) and any others involving a board with wheels, skiis, blades or sail etc,...wrestling a friend or boxing a bully, martial arts ..horse-back riding, farm chores or even climbing a tree for pete sake.

BUT, But,...but,.....the "kids" getting injured from the above mentioned,.....are generally kids of a "tad" more advanced age, "AND" life "experience". I agree they are experiencing "life" in an often painful manner but at least,..it's "often" one of "their" choice where they have observed others and at least have "some" small idea of the dangers involved and "accept" it. (Even if simply TRUSTING mom or dad or uncle's word on it).

However,..(sorry to be so lengthy,...AGAIN!),..but I "think" the age range of the "Children",... that many of us consider mixing with tractors, (buckets, etc), are the "little" ones, barely more than babies, some just learning to walk and those in the "pre-school" age bracket. (Personally I think it applies to those a tad older also)(?)

BUT it bothers me to see an adult, spread a blanket in the bucket and very "carefully" set a little toddler in the corner and give him that little one hand sign that says: sit still, don't move, we are gonna have FUN!! Hang on! Perhaps sit two or three or more, I've seen five, (neighbour).

Then away we go, slow and careful,.. but can the operator even "see" ONE of those little children,.. can barely hear them in there? NO ! Of course NOT!!
OH, heck one of them tossed his teddy bear out,....that "was" a Teddy-Bear we just ran over was it not? .....ooOOPS!! Hit the Brakes! OH-Oh the rest of 'm flew out!! ....(Sorry doesn't count!)

ONE More Item: . . . "fender-seats" on tractors,... if the manufacturer designed it and you deem it safe "WITH" a seat belt snugged up, . . . if you must! . . er, ah,..No comment.

OK,...Thanks for the opportunity Mike, an important topic,..BUT,.."THAT" is "IT" for me,....NO more "tractor-kid-safety" rantings from me, I have had my say,..much more than my share,...SO,..I'm outta here !!!! JUST TRY TO BE SAFE AND KEEP THE LITTLE ONES SAFE TOO!!! Thanks!!

I agree with you 200% tug. Why would any responsible parent put their children knowingly in harms way? Riding in a bucket is just begging for trouble. You are not the one that has to explain to the family why your child and friends are dead. Tug, no matter how you try, you can not fix stupid.

A very belated WELCOME ABOARD Transit !!! And my thanks for your response to that lengthy epistle. I appreciate your comments very much. Now if I could just manage to keep all my posts down to this length, I'd feel much better and I'm sure others would also. Thanks Transit, take care.
