A tale of two 5yd dump trucks....

I am a biased Cornbinder man. The Loadstar is heavier built from the ground up. Parts are always obtainable in wrecking yards for either of these trucks. The Loadstar will have either a 304 or 345 in it. Not a lot of the 1600 trucks came with a 392. I would make sure they both have power steering and crawl under them, check the Emergency brake assembly and dash components and interior for wear or abuse. IHC doors can be in bad shape. The cowl right under the windshield is prone to rust and rot, INSIDE, ie the fresh air vent going in to the cab. That can be rotted badly. Dash parts and switches for the Chev will be easier to find new. The most important thing if you buy the International, take the serial number to a dealer, pay them twenty bucks or what ever they want and get the factory line setting sheet. It tells what each component is and is the key to replacement of parts and components in the drive train.

Wow! That's a beautiful truck. I think I saw this post at work and I don't think the picture came through when I first read it. That's super nice!

Hope it works out for you. One of my happy days last year was seeing my dump truck sold and leaving my property. I thought I could save some money hauling rock from the local quarry but it wasn't worth it. I quickly realize that contract hauler rightly earns his money driving the hilly-no shoulder roads in my area. That was with a diesel with air brakes too.

That truck would have been a steal at three times the price in my area. Which I could find something like that for hauling water. Congrats

Nice! ... and you even have some killer custom pinstriping to boot!

I've been reading up on and thinking of using a product like this:
BLACK-MAX stops rust dead in it's tracks | Rhomar Industries

... for my 16ft bed and under it etc. and my 54" removable side panels. Home Depot and a few others carry similar products to convert rust to something useful and prevent it from spreading. And there is almost no prep. I guess this kind of product is a good thing that came from EPA ... they don't want people sand blasting rusty metal on bridges etc., so this stuff just goes straight on rust ... won't work if there's no rust.

Did the paint you use have rust super powers in it?

Before I found the International I found a bunch of F700 that had all seen better days and were in rough shape. Looks like you scored pretty good with the F800. Make sure you post pictures of the donor truck when it arrives!

The paint I sprayed on the bed is supposed to stop rust, but it's probably nowhere near as good as the stuff you linked. I've also been looking at POR-15 based upon a recommendation from a coworker...he really likes it and has had good luck using it.

I picked up some sheetmetal to patch the floorboard and I'll probably coat that section with Herculiner, roll-on bed liner paint. I'll also coat the rusty area with one of the rust converting/sealing paints to keep it from getting worse. I didn't really look at the cab of the parts truck, so I might have a whole floor pan on the way! I'll definitely post pics when it gets here.

This is a better shot of how the bed turned out after scraping the loose stuff off and hitting it with a rattle can...not a perfect match, but close enough for now. I have to scrap off the old reflector strips and put the new ones on, and my neighbor has two fresh 1.75" thick top boards for me. It doesn't look half bad at 20ft and 20mph! I figure I should be decent and remove the old company name/DOT/phone etc, so I'll have to hit them with a heat gun and hope they come off easily.

Wow! I should go into business importing old trucks to Canada

That will work to remove the stickers.

Two things
1. Be careful with the great fun tip.
2. There will still be marks where the stickers were. So you will still have marks

Yeah, I expect to see the marks, but thought I'd try an eraser wheel and/or buffer as Terry suggested. If I get really motivated I could probably put a quick coat of paint on the whole thing, but I'll probably just spend time moving dirt with it!

Nice truck G!

My F450 was the same way, as the dump body was the same color as the cab. LOTS of surface rust and paint peeling by the sheet. I painted it glossy black with Rustoleum, but hate it. The gloss makes the rough spots stand out. I'll give it a quick sanding and repaint with flat. I can't tell from the pictures, did you paint yours in flat or semi-gloss?

Good call on the F800. I paid twice as much for half the truck, and had to put a full set of tires and brake on too! But my truck needs to be under CDL (no farm exemption) and I do take it across the state on the regular.

BTW - I like the tarp system you have.

Congrats, that's a real beauty of a truck, neighbor.

What does insurance run on something like that?

I really would love to have a 3 or 5 yard dump on hand for moving dirt around my own property, and bringing gravel for my 1000' driveway... but funds are tight and I don't have facilities to maintain something that beastly.
