My F450 was the same way, as the dump body was the same color as the cab. LOTS of surface rust and paint peeling by the sheet. I painted it glossy black with Rustoleum, but hate it. The gloss makes the rough spots stand out. I'll give it a quick sanding and repaint with flat. I can't tell from the pictures, did you paint yours in flat or semi-gloss?

Good call on the F800. I paid twice as much for half the truck, and had to put a full set of tires and brake on too! But my truck needs to be under CDL (no farm exemption) and I do take it across the state on the regular.

BTW - I like the tarp system you have.

Thanks! I was looking more for something under CDL limits just to make things simpler, but I thought this truck was solid (other than the one spot in the floor!) and wasn't impressed at all with the three trucks I looked at prior, so I went with it.

I'm leaning towards getting a CDL again, but at least I can go with the farm exemption for now.

What does insurance run on something like that?

I really would love to have a 3 or 5 yard dump on hand for moving dirt around my own property, and bringing gravel for my 1000' driveway... but funds are tight and I don't have facilities to maintain something that beastly.

Thanks! Insurance sort of depends on the exact weight, and the intended use, but for six months it was a bit under $350 as a farm truck. I'm not sure if it would go up if it was a straight commercial use or not.

I managed to get the floor patched today. Surprisingly, the rest of the floor everywhere else is totally fine, and it's just this one area that's bad. When i started peeling back the mat I was getting worried until I saw it didn't go any further. It had a layer of mud/dirt/rust under the floor mat in this area, so I can only assume it got trapped under the mat, and stayed there for a long time.

I'm thinking that if I have the time at some point in the future I'll pull the seats, remove the rest of the mat and paint the entire floor with POR-15 or something similar to seal it....can't hurt.

So, I cut away the mat and insulation, then scraped all the loose stuff, pried up anything suspect, then vacuumed, scraped some more, etc until I had it pretty clean. I then painted all of the rusty areas with POR-15 right up to where the white paint was intact (you can sort of see the white painted area towards the shifter boot in the pic below, but I trimmed a bit more of the mat after I took this picture). I cut a section of 16ga galvanized steel to fit, and secured it with self-taping screws (added a couple more after the picture). I might switch to rivets for a cleaner look...not sure. Now I'm debating/researching whether a roll-on bedliner will stick to the galvanized steel the way it is, of if I would need to prep is any particular way.

Anyway, I know these pics aren't the greatest....hard place to really get a picture, but you get the idea.

If your worried about it sticking to galvanized metal, you can wipe it down with a sponge soaked in regular vinigar, let it sry, and then coat.

That's a thought. I've been researching painting over galvanizing and it seems to be a mixed bag. I was thinking of trying an etching primer, then the bedliner, and if it doesn't work, I'm not really out anything. It's a small area so even if I have to sand it, prime it and then do the bedliner it won't take long. The question then becomes whether the metal is better protected left the way it is. I guess I'll run it for a while and see how it is.

My guess is if left alone it will outlast the truck around it.
