I regret to inform all last thursday my father-in-law was out with a friend drilling some holes with the auger on his Ford 3000. He was sitting in the seat and heard a noise and looked around to see his friend tangled up in the PTO shaft. He is currently in ICU , lost an arm, and almost lost a leg. Please pray for his recovery and be careful around your machine. We need to remember how dangerous they can be.

Reg -

My thoughts will be with your father-in-law's friend.

That's a horrible thing to happen to anybody, and it hurts all the more when it strikes that close to home. I can only imagine the trauma your father-in-law went through, too.

You can rest assured that some of us will take this warning seriously and be that much more careful around our tractors.

A horrible thing Reg, for all parties involved. Our hearts go out to them!
Thanks for the 'heads-up" reminder. There's just no-such-thing as too-alert.

( this is just one more reason I'm putting my auger on my backhoe,... if I'm operating it from the backhoe seat, I'm looking at it !)

Reg, same from us, our prayers are with your father-in-law and his friend. A terrible thing. One they will both play "what if" with the rest of their lives.

Reminds us all that these are not toys.

You can add my prayers and best wishes for recovery to the others; both for the physical damage to one man and the psychological damage to your father-in-law.

Please extend my sympathy and best wishes to your father-in-law's friend and his family--and to your father-in-law, as well. Undoubtedly he is experiencing trauma from this tragedy. As for the rest of us, "there but for the grace of God..."

RegWaters,

I'm very sorry to hear about the accident. Our thoughts are with your FatherInLaw's Friend AND you FatherInLaw. Often the injured victim is only one who gets any attention, the other victim, the one who witnessed such an incident is ignored. Don't forget that your FatherInLaw can be injured by this as well.

You might want to do some websearches on Critical Incidents. Both men are likely to have to deal with mental issues of the accident. They might have flashbacks, insomnia, loss of appetite, etc., that can happen after an accident. It might help if they or their family are aware of these reactions.

I know this will further ingrain safety issues into my actions.

Good Luck...

Reg,
May the Lord be with him and his family. I know two others that have been entangled in PTO shafts and the PTO shafts always win. That is why it should always be off before getting close. Yet, sometimes we may say to our selves that "I just need to____". BUT WE SHOULD NEVER.......
May all our prayers speed his recovery.

Reg,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. That happened to my dad with his 8n. Wrapped his coveralls up tight and luckily killed the tractor. He was lucky!

That really scares me. I have an auger that I've drilled about 50 holes with. My wife and I were using it and I had to continually encourage her to get away from it. I know I certainly don't want to loan it to anyone for safety reasons.

This is a horrible thing to have happen to anybody. I have first hand experience with a very similar accident. My daughter, working for the Parks Dept, got her glove caught in the shear bolt of an auger while the operator was looking forward. When he looked back, she was spinning around with the auger. She was 20 years old and less than 100 lbs which saved her arm. Her arm was broken in three places but many hours of surgery, numerous plates and rods, many screws, lots of support, and plenty of luck, she still has an arm. Now, 5 years later, she has about 75% use of her dominate left arm. She still has almost yearly operations and will never be able to do that type work again which she loves. However, the story still had a fairly happy ending and I can only hope that RegWaters father-in-law and friend can be as lucky. Sometimes it wasn't obvious whether my daughter, or the tractor operator, was more devestated by her accident. Both their lives are changed forever.

You can imagine that it was a bit traumatic when I purchased an auger for my B2910. On the other hand, I have no shortage of family members making sure I use it carefully (not that I need it).

I offer my condolences and best wishes for both men.

Larry...
