It's rumored very likely that Toyota is planning full 3/4 and 1+ton models with diesel engines that will compete directly with the HD models out of the big 3. Engine make? Toyota owns Hino, who is a major producer of engines, but some speculate they may be cozying up to Caterpillar.........who is a major sponsor for one of the Toyota NASCAR teams.

Tundra 1-ton crew cab 4wd with a true Cat engine...............does that get anyone's attention;)

Put me down as someone who has also heard that talk...

building a 3/4-1 ton with a big block diesel harvested from one of there other "industries"

my guess is 5-10 years with a hybrid version to be introduced about the same time. Basicly putting the same tech into large "light trucks" as they would the trucks that UPS/fedex uses to deliver packages....

CAT has zero interest in small-medium diesels for OTR applications. They're on the ropes right now with mediums (C-7). This year GM actually dropped CAT from their medium diesel lineup.

Really fo ultimate efficiency and power, we need a diesel powerplant with an independently controlled electric motor at each wheel, like a diesel locomotive.

I thought Toyota was such a superior truck company?

Maybe they're finding it's more difficult to manufacture trucks that might actually get used for work?

That's funny:)

Nobody said they where perfect. They've had 20 failures and sold 37,000 Tundras in first 3 months, roughly 26,000 of them 5.7's.

The cams where from a supplier, not built in house. Sounds kinda like the rear axle failures on the Titan, supplied by Dana.

Toyota will fix the problem and keep selling trucks. Read the thread on the GM 6.5 TD, everyone says the injector pumps are horrible and fail regularly. The real issue is that the same problem exist for what 7-8 years of GM 6.5's. I've got a 6.5 on it's 3rd or 4th injector pump.

Also noticed in the article that Toyota has overtaken GM and is now the largest auto manufacturer in the world.

They outsold them for the 1st quarter. Hardly makes them bigger in a permanent sense, but whatever makes ya happy dude.

Biggest don't mean the best, but they've got Americans so brainwashed between them and Consumer reports, we'll all be driving Japanese cars & trucks soon.

God Bless America....what's left of it anyways.

Hi, JUst thought I would step in and stir the pot a bit to liven up the conversation. I like to try to put out fires by dousing them with gasoline!

I have detected, over time, various negative comments regarding Consumers Reports in posts right here in River City, uh I mean TBN.

Consumer reports has been sued several times over their disseminated information about cars and trucks. Various of the manufacturers have sued them but CR has NEVER LOST A SUIT!!!

Wonder why? They are unbiased reporters of the information they derive from their testing. Their testing is done based on rigorous scientific and engineering principles. You might not like what they report but it is extremely difficult to find factual logical cause to refute them.

Everyone is perfectly within their rights to disagree with CR over anything but you should ask yourself... is Johny in step and the rest of the army out of step?

Of course CR isn't perfect but if you find yourself disagreeing very much or very often with their test results which withstand scientific scrutiny then you have to ask yourself if you are open minded or if you only like sources that agree with you. Whether or not you are personally upset when the ox is gored seems to depend on whose ox it is.

OF course Motor Trend is a superior source of reliable and unbiased information. I once bought the Motor Trend Car of the Year. It was wonderful for about 50K miles when it did what virtually every single one of those puppies did, it totally died. Ran fine one day and couldn't be started no matter what the next day. I gave it to charity. Remember the rotary Maxda sedan?

To my wife and I and several of out friends Motor Trend recommendations are the KISS OF DEATH, a good reason to NOT BUY a truck or car.

The problem with CR and other rags is not their test methods, but what they are testing. Do you care about the same things that they care about?

We used to get Car and Driver in the office. The reviews were hilarious. They would evaluate many things, but almost always recommend the most expensive car (usually a BMW) because they like the feel of the radio buttons or something equally trivial. They should change the name of that magazine to "Knob and Button".

Never said it makes me happy, I'm just not in denial about the facts.

I also think your mistaken about the brainwashing. I don't read Consumer Reports, but I do purchase and drive cars and trucks. Of all the brands I've owned and driven, Toyota quality and value has been at the top and the Chevy's and Dodges at the bottom. I've got many freinds and family that have the same experience.

I'd buy American every time if I was confident that the quality and value where =

I'm sorry, I must have missed that part. Where was brainwashing mentioned?:

Toiyabe: I tried to buy American in 1997 and later found my Dodge was Hecho en Mexico. My 2008 F-250 PSD was built in the USA and has a sticker attesting to it. My 1984 Ford F-250 diesel was built in Kansas.

I like to buy American and am willing to pay more for less to do so but there are limits to how much more for how much less.

Funny how so many folks detest CR but seem to be expert in the minutia of their reports. CR reports on a lot of stuff not just FOREIGN cars. CR isn't holy writ but it is a reasonable adjunct to buying a lot of stuff if you are of a mind to buy for logical reasons. Many purchases are not based on logic and that is fine.

I don't have the time, $ or inclination, to try to do enough research on my own to reduce the value to me of CR.

Of course we have to be mindful of their more than obvious political slant and the "programs" they seek to influence.

They are currently lobbying for the EPA to change the testing protocol for the mileage figures on window stickers of new cars to make the tests more in line with how Americans actually drive. Now there is a dangerous precedent in the making. A slippery slope that once started down will be hard to get back up!
