Did you ever go out and start your tractor just to hear the diesel clatter and get a whiff of diesel fumes? A simple thing like this can bring a smile to my face.:)

Some tractor smells take a little time to get used to. I've just finished repainting the 1964 MF-135 diesel that I bought last July. Couldn't stand the smell of that dirty tractor while I was detailing the little beast prior to painting. But I gradually got used to the smell of that greasy thing on my hands and clothes so now I don't mind that aroma at all.

Sorta like a wife.

I haven't done it with my diesel but years ago when I used to race sports cars I had an old oil lamp in the garage that I filled with Castrol (the kind made with castor oil) that I would light when I went to work on the "Iron Mistress". I loved that smell.

After working on and around diesel stuff all my life the smell makes me sick, black smoke is ugly and the "rattle" is just annoying. The smell of pine trees and fresh cut alfalfa is wonderful while some good Mexican "sippin" tequila ain't bad either.

My favorite was always the '50s Cat D8 - starting with the pony 2 cyl and the the big diesel rumbling up - used to love hanging around construction sites soaking up the diesel exhaust - kids can't even get close now. Heck I can't even get close! :D

What makes you think the rest of us aren't weird?

I don't know which I love best, the sound of a CAT C12 (505HP), or the sound of my MF 28HP. Fortunetly I don't have to chose. I can listen to both. I do love the sounds of diesel engines and the smell/taste of good whisky.

I used to love the smell of that diesel loco hauling us outbye at the end of a hard shift underground heading towards pit bottom!
Diesel fumes smell stronger underground too! Probably why I'm addicted to them.

I do the same thing with my diesel truck...fire it up with the remote start and stand by the exhaust. The beautiful sound a turbo diesel makes out of a 4" pipe is sweet music...and the smell of a cold diesel's exhasut in the morning...mmmmm....mmmmmm...good! Is it getting hot in here or is it just me?

Cannot wait till I pick up the JD soon so I can enjoy that one too!
