Air intake modification ideas?

Nice looking mod. It would appear at least six feet of extra distance was added for air to travel through. Will this affect how the engine will breathe or cool? I do not know or even have a clue, that is why I am asking.

It might run a little hotter!! (might) but should run just as good as stock!! look at some of the old tractors they had it!!!;)

Yes, we wondered about that (running hotter and decreasing performance) as well. It appears that the new intake actually improved performance slightly: just a little better RPM with full acceleration and the gauge on the temperature meter sits at the same place as it did before modification.

Cold outside air is what we always wanted for performance when we were building cars in the 70's.

With that short a distance air restriction shouldnt be a problem. You will probably gain a small amount of HP by getting cooler air into the engine than the previously hot air from around the radiator. You should be able to find a pre-cleaner bowl to fit that setup at TSC or even a tractor dealer. Hopefully the size will be the same. If not just get a larger size and fit a PVC reducer between it and the intake pipe you built.

thats good to here not only did you improve the design of it you unlocked a little power as well!

When I built a homemade snorkel for my Yamaha Big Bear ATV, I was very suprised to find that the snorkel flowed much better than the stock air ducting. When I would try to ford deep water with the snorkel system, the engine would cool off enough to make it sputter under load. At first I thought something was shorting out or I had a snorkel leak, but one look at the plug told me It needed more fuel. I purchased a performance jet kit, and actualy had to go from a 125 stock size main jet to a 132, and now it doesnt miss a beat. All I can figure is that like previously mentioned, the cooler denser air charge from the snorkel plays a big role in performance increases in some snorkeled engines, also, the long straight runs of pipe probably play a role as well. I used 1 1/2 inch heavy schedule pvc pipe with assorted street L`s and couplers, 3 3/16 hose barbs, a trap, and 2 ft of 1 1/2 flexible sump pump discharge hose. here is a pic of the quad with snorkel system.

That is good to know. My Yanmar has the filter in about the same place, same problems with dust and expensive filters. I have my side panels off right now because of some engine work I needed to do, looking at your set up my panels may not go back on.

Until you find a precleaner for the addition, consider coating the intake with a thin layer of grease that you can easily wipe out. Especially if you can put it in at the bends, as that might catch a little of the dust, which will prolong the life of your air cleaner. Remember to change it regularly by wiping out the grease and cleaning it, then reapplying.

Oil bath air filter'd be nice.

Weight on the top of the stack is an issue for the pre-filter. We thought that a Centri or Enginaire pre-filter might be a good idea. Though I'd guess that an oil bath cleaner would filter out more of the smaller silt and clay particles.

Perhaps they make oil bath bowls out of lighter material now; plastic rather than heavy glass like the one on our 9N?

David, interesting idea about coating the inside of the tube with grease. Perhaps grease on some sort of easily removeable section or on the inside of the cap would make cleaning and reapplying the grease easier.
