The glass setting jar was likely a prefilter like a cyclone.. it was not an oem part of the 9n oil bath air fitler.

David, interesting idea about coating the inside of the tube with grease. Perhaps grease on some sort of easily removeable section or on the inside of the cap would make cleaning and reapplying the grease easier.

Grease sounds messy and a pain to clean. Does your TYM have filter elements in the canister the way my Deere 4200 does? Anytime I change the filters (200 hour factory service interval recommendation) I find the outer filter has dust and dirt in it, and the inner filter is almost pristine; which is amazing given the fine dust our claycrete turns into during the dry months. Anyway, I just change both elements at the same time as I have the tractor apart for service.

Soundguy,

Yes, I checked and it is an air filter. The 9N is a faithful machine but we have been neglectful, haven't done much work on it - always plan to work on it in the winter when we have "extra" time ....but.

Yes, 2 elements. Before the modification both would get extremely full in a day's work in the dust. Now, after 12 hours the outer filter was somewhat dirty but the inner was clean. I read somewhere, I think at a filter manufacturer's website, that a filter works best when it is slightly full.

Also, when we are moving lots of soil we try to wet down the area with the sprinklers the day before to reduce the dust hazard.

A very thin layer of grease is as easy to install as wiping on with your hands, and as easy to remove as wiping it off with a couple of paper towels. Put it upstream of your air filter and it prolongs the life of the filter, for those days when you need to be working versus working on it. If you HAVE TO put off the filter change, it might make a little difference in just how bad it is when you do get it changed.
I am not saying put off a filter change, but it might let the filter work a little longer before clogging up, especially in severe dust areas.

IMHO.. I'd install an oil bath filter ahead of it.. etc..
